Da un po’ di anni evito accuratamente ogni serie tv o film anche solo vagamente angosciante, che ho già abbastanza angosce per i fatti miei e questo deve avermi abbassato la soglia di tolleranza. Quindi ieri sera ho visto due puntate di The rook col fidanzato (gente coi superpoteri, gente sparata, gente morta che riprende vita) e stanotte non riuscivo a dormire e ho pure avuto gli incubi. Se guardavamo modern family non succedeva.
Anche io più passa il tempo e maggiori sono le complicazioni attraversate, meno tollero serie, film e pure romanzi angoscianti.

If anyone needs convincing that the next pandemic is only an accident away, check out a recent paper in Cell, a prestigious scientific journal. Researchers, many of whom work or have worked at the Wuhan Institute of Virology (yes, the same institution), describe taking samples of viruses found in bats (yes, the same animal) and experimenting to see if they could infect human cells and pose a pandemic risk.
Sounds like the kind of research that should be conducted — if at all — with the very highest safety protocols, as W. Ian Lipkin and Ralph Baric discussed in a recent guest essay. But if you scroll all the way down to Page 19 of the journal article and squint, you learn that the scientists did all this under what they call “BSL-2 plus” conditions, a designation that isn’t standardized and that Baric and Lipkin say is “insufficient for work with potentially dangerous respiratory viruses.” If just one lab worker unwittingly inhaled the virus and got infected, there’s no telling what the impact could be on Wuhan, a city of millions, or the world.

Anche se non sto più cercando casa continuo a guardare gli annunci che mi arrivano via mail. Ho scoperto un genere letterario per me nuovo: la prosa degli annunci immobiliari. Questa agenzia è particolarmente ispirata:
GAMBE IN SPALLA: 4 PIANI A PIEDI TI ASPETTANO
L’espressione gambe in spalla viene usata come forma di esortazione e di incitamento, per spingere una persona a rimboccarsi le maniche per impegnarsi più a fondo in una certa attività.
Sicuramente ci va incitamento per salire 4 piani a pieni in un condominio senza ascensore.
Ti stupirai a sapere che i proprietari attuali hanno più di 70 anni, perciò niente scuse!
Non venirmi a dire che non hai la forza di fare 4 piani a piedi, se quello che ti aspetta è un appartamento con tre camere, due bagni, sala, cucina e lavanderia.

An 1855 article composed by Wallace in Sarawak implicitly outlined much of what would become the accepted theory of biological evolution. This was widely ignored by academicians, although both Darwin and his colleague Charles Lyell read it, and grasped its importance: Lyell urged Darwin to overcome his private hesitations and quickly bring his work to publication.
Recovering from a malarial episode in 1858 which had trig- gered new insights in his evolutionary theory, Wallace wrote them up in a manuscript, which he sent by post from the island of Ternate to Darwin, asking for his thoughts, and to send the paper on to Lyell for possible publication. Wallace approached scientific inquiry as a social and collab- orative enterprise, ‘little suspecting that Darwin was not so much a collec- tor of ideas on evolution but a hoarder who was unlikely to give anything back’.36 It was this event that moved Darwin, on the advice of Lyell and Joseph Hooker, to present an earlier private letter to the Harvard botanist Asa Gray outlining his ideas to the Linnaean society.

It is well known that Friedrich Engels declared at Marx’s funeral that just as Darwin discovered the law of development of organic nature, so Marx had discovered the law of development of human history. It is also well known that Marx chided Darwin for reproducing English bourgeois social relations in nature, with his emphasis on individual competition and inheritance, to the occlusion of symbiosis and mutual aid. It is perhaps less well known that he considered Darwin’s theory of natural selection as ‘the class struggle writ large.
