Still, at least part of this description is probably true.
The story is really quite entertaining, in a horrifying way. Early in the effort to create nuclear bombs, all the plutonium in the world fit into a single vial. It would be experimented with, then chemically purified, then used again, over and over.
As the plutonium sat in the solution, it would slowly break down into other elements. Some of those elements, such as radon, are gaseous, and less dense than the solution. This meant that, the longer the plutonium solution sat in a sealed glass vial, the more pressure built up inside the vial.
The sealed vial was opened by breaking off the top when it was time to use its contents. However, when a certain scientist went to open the vial, it was under too much pressure, and exploded, with much of the plutonium solution getting into his mouth.
