if swearing, Nazi analogies, decreasing interest in other sides of the argument and a tendency to get lost in explosive rows now define an increasing share of political discourse, we all know where that change is fundamentally rooted. It begins and ends online – where, as the US tech pioneer Jaron Lanier puts it, the algorithms that decide whether something gets pushed towards prominence or is buried in the digital undergrowth are “neither liberal nor conservative … just pro-paranoia, pro-irritability, and pro-general assholeness”. What are all these rituals of confrontation actually for? In the face of an audience that is constantly distracted by smartphone screens, what seems to count is the duty to try and create clips that turn into online memes, so that this or that programme can crash-land in as many news feeds as possible, and thereby justify its existence. Ieri, durante i festeggiamenti post-partita, discutevo con un mio amico della gallofobia degli italiani e di come questo fenomeno sia abbastanza recente. Alla fine entrambi abbiamo deciso che ha probabilmente origini calcistiche e abbiamo datato l'esplosione della malattia alla sconfitta italiana all'Euro 2000 (con una probabile incubazione all'epoca dei quarti di finale persi ai rigori nel 1998).

Il parlamento israeliano, la Knesset, ha approvato una delle leggi più importanti della sua storia, oltre che quella più conforme alla realtà. La legge sullo stato-nazione (che definisce Israele come la patria storica del popolo ebraico, incoraggia la creazione di comunità riservate agli ebrei, declassa l’arabo da lingua ufficiale a lingua a statuto speciale) mette fine al generico nazionalismo di Israele e presenta il sionismo per quello che è. La legge mette fine anche alla farsa di uno stato israeliano “ebraico e democratico”, una combinazione che non è mai esistita e non sarebbe mai potuta esistere per l’intrinseca contraddizione tra questi due valori, impossibili da conciliare se non con l’inganno. - Haldo 9000 - -

non sapevo che la definizione avesse fatto la sua comparsa già con Hannah Arendt, che d'altronde giocava in un campionato tutto suo. L'accusa di antisemitismo per ogni critica a Israele in questi termini invece è un'acquisizione di questo ultimo quarto di secolo, a stare larghi. C'era molta più attenzione e cautela in passato a tenere i contesti separati, a comprendere che a situazioni complesse corrispondono opinioni complesse e diversificate. - Numerio Negidio - -

In seeking to update the treaty, governments in the three countries have candidly sought to thwart the will of the people. Their stated intention was to finish the job before Mexico’s presidential election in July. The leading candidate, Andrés Lopez Obrador, has expressed hostility to Nafta, so it had to be done before the people cast their vote. They might wonder why so many have lost faith in democracy. Nafta provides a perfect illustration of why all trade treaties should contain a sunset clause. Provisions that made sense to the negotiators in the early 1990s make no sense to anyone today, except fossil fuel companies and greedy lawyers. The most obvious example is the way its rules for investor-state dispute settlement have been interpreted. These clauses (chapter 11 of the treaty) were supposed to prevent states from unfairly expropriating the assets of foreign companies. Too often when we discuss hateful portrayals of migrants or Muslims or other minorities, we focus on the far right, or on groups such as Pegida, or on countries such as Hungary and politicians such as Viktor Orbán. It is certainly important that we call out such organisations and politicians and eviscerate their arguments. But we need also to recognise that the truth about dehumanisation is far more uncomfortable and far closer to home.
