The full title of this 1836 painting by John Glover is "Mills' Plains, Ben Lomond, Ben Loder and Ben Nevis in the distance". And in fact you can make out the distinctive features on the section of the mountain now known as "Carr Villa" with Old Bill's Monument and Misery Bluff. But again it's the foreground that makes this painting unique. Here, a number of years after they were forcibly removed from the land in the "Black War" (1820-1830), Glover paints in an aboriginal camp.

Tongerlongeter is an epic story of resistance, sorrow and survival. Leader of the Oyster Bay nation of south-east Tasmania in the 1820s and ’30s, Tongerlongeter and his allies prosecuted the most effective frontier resistance ever mounted on Australian soil, inﬂicting some 354 casualties. His brilliant campaign inspired terror throughout the colony, forcing Governor George Arthur to counter with a massive military operation in 1830. Tongerlongeter escaped but the cumulative losses had taken their toll. On New Year’s Eve 1831, having lost his arm, his country, and all but 25 of his people, the chief agreed to an armistice. Quel pomeriggio eravamo in barca a S.Vito lo Capo e lo skipper decise che era il caso di fuggire dal fronte che si sposava da sud/est e riparare a Capo D'Orlando nel nostro porto. o ci si poteva pagare la sanità a chiunque più di adesso, o si potevano mettere in pensioni per la mia generazione che non la vedrà mai, mille cose si potevano fare. Dando per buono l'ambito "aiutare i privati a migliorare le condizioni dell'edilizia" sennò non se ne esce, il problema maggiore è stato proprio creare una modalità talmente complessa e delirante che solo chi poteva accaparrarsi i tecnici e le imprese migliori ne ha usufruito per bene. E chi può farsi fare un progetto da uno bravo alzando il telefono e assumere un'impresa che non scappa dopo tre giorni?
