"For a regular civilian male, hanging out in a hotel suite with porn starlets is a tense and emotionally convolved affair. There is, first, the matter of having seen the various intimate activities and anatomical parts of these starlets in videos heretofore and thus (weirdly) feeling shy about meeting them. But there is also a complex erotic tension."

"Because porn films’ worlds are so sexualized, with everybody seemingly teetering right on the edge of coitus all the time and it taking only the slightest nudge or excuse—a stalled elevator, an unlocked door, a cocked eyebrow, a firm handshake—to send everyone tumbling into a tangled mass of limbs and orifices, there’s a bizarre unconscious expectation/dread/ hope that this is what might happen in Max Hardcore’s hotel room." - Eivind - - (Edit | Remove)

Egyptian Monasticism: The Growth of the Solitary Life - The ASOR Blog (http://asorblog.org/2015/... ) (http://asorblog.org/wp-co... http://asorblog.org/wp-co... )

The etymology of the word ‘monk’ lies in the Greek monachos, meaning single or solitary. The root of the word monastery is the Greek monastirion, which was used initially for the cell of a hermit. This is clear indication that the origin of the monastic movement was the personal seclusion rather than the communal life. But the variety of monastic life according to a common rule and within a closed community developed soon afterwards. Between 318 and 323 CE Pachomius, a former soldier in the Roman army and convert to Christianity, founded his first community at Tabennisi, in Upper Egypt. This would be the start of coenobitic monasticism (from the Greek koinios bios, communal life). - Eivind - - (Edit | Remove)

FYI: There was a group of young non-believers in classical Athens who called themselves the "Seekers of Ill Fortune." They went around blaspheming in the most shocking ways they could think of, like breaking in to temples and feasting on the offerings, and claimed that their not being struck by lightning or similar fates was evidence against the existence of these gods.

All my cousin wanted to do was flee the horrors of Syria, but ended up drowning in the sea - http://www.independent.co... (http://www.independent.co... )

"These migrants, dying in their hundreds aboard death-trap boats, are some the most vulnerable people in the world. Yet our media and politicians talk about them like they are dirty, unwanted, or – worse yet – invisible. Newspapers give columns to people like Katie Hopkins, and publish their Neo-Nazi bile. We devote so much less of our time to questioning who these people are, why they would embark on such deadly journeys, and what can be done to alleviate their suffering. And we continuously fail to ask the most important question: why is nothing being done to help them? Instead, our politicians – even those on the supposed ‘Left’ – talk about migration in terms of economic gain. Our media has turned "asylum seeker" into a euphemism for "benefit thief". Far-right groups are on the rise across Europe, and anti-Semitism, Islamophobia and other racially motivated hate crimes are on the rise. Our apathy towards those dying in the Mediterranean epitomises this growing intolerance. We are moving inextricably towards a point where we worship borders and security over human life, and where black and brown bodies will perpetually be dismissed as the "Other"." - Eivind - - (Edit | Remove)

In a mythical past Athens defeated Atlantis before they both sank in the sea:

"Many great and wonderful deeds are recorded of your state in our histories. But one of them exceeds all the rest in greatness and valour. For these histories tell of a mighty power which unprovoked made an expedition against the whole of Europe and Asia, and to which your city put an end. This power came forth out of the Atlantic Ocean, for in those days the Atlantic was navigable; and there was an island situated in front of the straits which are by you called the Pillars of Heracles; the island was larger than Libya and Asia put together, and was the way to other islands, and from these you might pass to the whole of the opposite continent which surrounded the true ocean; for this sea which is within the Straits of Heracles is only a harbour, having a narrow entrance, but that other is a real sea, and the surrounding land may be most truly called a boundless continent. Now in this island of Atlantis there was a great and wonderful empire which had rule over the whole island and several others, and over parts of the continent, and, furthermore, the men of Atlantis had subjected the parts of Libya within the columns of Heracles as far as Egypt, and of Europe as far as Tyrrhenia." - Eivind - - (Edit | Remove)

Interesting way to count the days: "Unlike the Western system of months and days, the Mesoamerican sacred calendar moves the coefficient AND the day sign in parallel. You start with 1 Crocodile, then you move ahead both the number and the day sign, going to 2 Wind on the next day. You keep going until you end up with 13 Reed, then you rewind the numbers but continue with the day sign, hence yielding 1 Jaguar. When you've exhausted all day signs and you're at 7 Flower, you rewind the day signs to Crocodile but continue with the number, giving you 8 Crocodile." http://www.ancientscripts... - Eivind - - (Edit | Remove)

Today I learned about siphonophores. They're pretty neat! https://www.youtube.com/w...
9 years ago - Comment - Hide - - - (Edit | Remove) - More...
"Siphonophores are of special scientific interest because they are composed of medusoid and polypoid zooids that are morphologically and functionally specialized. Each zooid is an individual module, but their integration with each other is so strong that the colony attains the function of a large organism. Indeed, most of the zooids are so specialized, they lack the ability to survive on their own. This is somewhat analogous to the construction and function of multicellular organisms; because multicellular organisms have organs which, like zooids, are specialized and interdependent, siphonophores may provide clues regarding the evolution of more complex bodies." http://en.wikipedia.org/w... - Eivind - - (Edit | Remove)

"The complement to a culture of celebrity has become therefore the unabashed theater of cruelty, the public spaces where we gaze upon the half-speed car wrecks of the lives of others in the throes of failure, Nascar for the politically challenged."

"In one sense, this programming of everyday sadism explicitly aimed at the poor and distressed is so ubiquitous that one need hardly recite the titles: The Jerry Springer Show, Dr. Phil, The Apprentice, Shattered, Unbreakable, Big Brother, Hell’s Kitchen, Survivor, American Idol—it is hardly worth the minor effort that it takes to disparage it. A moment’s reflection reveals it is pervasive in American culture. Unremarkable people, desperate for some sort of acknowledgment and validation, yearning for some promise of escape from the stale and commonplace, offer themselves up on the altar of abject humiliation to an audience of millions; smarmy celebrities berate them to their face; and the spectacles proliferate because they are cheaper for the networks to program than either scripted fiction or news. In many instances, the audience is even encouraged to pay to “vote” for those to ostracize and banish—a clear simulacrum of the neoliberal marketplace." - Eivind - - (Edit | Remove)
