25 of the cleverest submissions in B.C. Ferries' naming contest (http://www.vancitybuzz.co... http://assets.vancitybuzz... )
1 decade ago from Bookmarklet - Comment - Hide - - - (Edit | Remove) - More...
"The ferry naming contest began Tuesday afternoon when B.C. Ferries announced the award of $500 to whoever could come up with the best names for three Intermediate Class ferries which will be added to the company fleet. But the ensuing results were expectantly not what B.C. Ferries had in mind. Taking the opportunity to deliver criticism to the company, customers sunk the contest under a tidal wave of hilarious and unlikely names, poking fun at fare increases, corporate greed and the B.C. government. While many of the names give an entertaining read, they won’t be considered in the contest due to somewhat strict naming criteria." - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)

Many Probiotics Taken for Celiac Disease Contain Gluten - NYTimes.com (http://well.blogs.nytimes... http://graphics8.nytimes.... )
1 decade ago from Bookmarklet - Comment - Hide - - - (Edit | Remove) - More...
Last year, doctors at Columbia University found that people with celiac disease frequently use probiotic supplements, but that those who take these products tend to experience more symptoms of the disease than those who do not. Now these experts say they may know why: More than half of the top-selling probiotic supplements they analyzed contained gluten, a protein found in wheat, barley and rye that is harmful to people with celiac disease. The authors of the study found gluten in probiotic supplements that carried “gluten-free” claims on their labels, and they discovered that the most expensive supplements were just as likely to contain gluten as the cheapest products. The results suggest that people with celiac disease, or those avoiding gluten for any reason, should be cautious about taking probiotic supplements, said Dr. Peter H. R. Green, the director of the Celiac Disease Center at Columbia University and the author of the new study, which was presented at a recent medical conference in Washington, called Digestive Disease Week 2015. He said that many people in this category do not realize that dietary supplements can be contaminated with gluten, and that it was baffling to him that gluten would turn up in these products at all. “The question is: Why are companies putting wheat or barley or rye in probiotic supplements?” Dr. Green said. “People use these natural products in an attempt to be healthy. Yet it’s a very poorly regulated industry. Can anyone trust a gluten-free label?” - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)

Mixed reaction to registration for gay couples - Taipei Times (http://www.taipeitimes.co... http://www.taipeitimes.co... )
1 decade ago from Bookmarklet - Comment - Hide - - - (Edit | Remove) - More...
"A new measure by the Kaohsiung City Government to allow unofficial registration of same-sex couples has drawn mixed responses from members of the local lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community. The new regulations, dubbed “sunshine registration,” were implemented yesterday, after the city government announced them last week. LGBT advocacy groups said that although the measure was well-intended, the new registration scheme was not legally binding. Accompanying a lesbian couple, A-fei (阿飛) and her partner, to a household registration office yesterday, the groups posed several questions to local authorities on the legal standing of the registration. The couple refused to register after finding out that the registration would not be written on their household certificates and that registration papers would lack official government seals. LGBT groups said that the new policy failed to effect meaningful change." - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)
"City officials have described the measure as a non-binding statement that enjoys no legal status of any sort in civil law and which serves as more of a “symbolic gesture” in the absence of a civil law amendment. However, the measure would allow city agencies — such as police, judicial officials or medical facilities — to gain access to information on registered same-sex partnerships, which could help inform the legal decisions of government agencies. Responding to criticism from LGBT groups, Kaohsiung Bureau of Civil Affairs Director Tseng Tzu-wen (曾姿雯) said that despite the lack of legal standing, the measure was intended to set an example for other municipal governments." - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)

Nearly nude man shot with stun gun at Florida airport (http://www.usatoday.com/s... http://www.gannett-cdn.co... )

"A man clad only in his underwear and toting Japanese fighting sticks was shot with a stun gun after he dashed into the main concourse of Tallahassee Regional Airport claiming he had a plane to catch. Police made contact with Chris Haynes, 26, after he sped to the airport's main entrance and left his vehicle unattended in the drop-off loading zone just before 4 a.m. ET May 5. He made a statement about having a plane to catch as he continued toward the Transportation Security Administration checkpoint, ignoring multiple commands to stop, court records show. Haynes, a Florida A&M University student whose hometown was not immediately available, received Taser wounds in the back and the buttocks before he was arrested. He was uninjured and was not in possession of an airline ticket, police said." - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)

This Outdoor Ad in Moscow Hides From the Police When It Sees Them Coming | Adweek (http://www.adweek.com/adf... http://www.adweek.com/fil... )

"Last summer, Russia imposed a full embargo on food imports from the European Union (as well as the U.S.) in retaliation for sanctions over Ukraine. This left authentic European food merchants in Moscow in a bit of a bind. But one Italian grocery store there, Don Giulio Salumeria, kept selling its real Italian food—and came up with a bizarre out-of-home stunt to advertise to consumers without tipping off the police. With help from agency The 23, the store developed a unique outdoor ad that could recognize police uniforms. Whenever the cops would appear, the ad would cycle out of its rotating display—in essence, physically hiding from the authorities." - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)

Bill allowing beer bikes advances in California Legislature - Inside Bay Area (http://www.insidebayarea.... )
1 decade ago from Bookmarklet - Comment - Hide - - - (Edit | Remove) - More...
"California lawmakers have advanced a bill that would allow so-called beer bikes to operate on streets, but leaves cities to decide if alcohol is allowed on board. The Senate on Monday unanimously passed the bill by Sen. Richard Pan, a Sacramento Democrat. SB530 would create a vehicle safety standard for a growing new crop of bike buses that allow up to 15 people to pedal at slow speeds. Beer bikes have been popping up in Sacramento and San Diego as a riding tour, often with stops at bars and restaurants. Pan says current state law does not include a definition for this type of vehicle, creating legal uncertainties." - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)

UT Student Invents A Trombone That Shoots Frickin' Flames (http://austin.com/ut-stud... http://mlzae1f6hd22a8hczk... )

"It’s rare that you see a new thing, but here’s one: A trombone that shoots flames as it is being played. The idea was hatched and developed by University of Texas at Austin student Valentin Guerin, an exchange student from France. He calls it the “pyro trombone,” according to Texas Exes. The invention isn’t just a novelty, either. Guerin is hoping his flaming instrument will help send the UT Trombone Choir to Spain for the 2015 International Trombone Festival. The group is raising money on Kickstarter, and anyone who makes a tax-deductible donation will be treated to a concert just before the group heads off. Among the gifts donors will receive is even a private concert — complete with the pyro trombone — for just $2,500." - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)
"“Due to decreased funding to education, nationwide, student travel budget funds have been cut drastically or, in our case, eliminated,” the group explained. “Your donations will be used to pay for travel-related trombone choir expenses (airline tickets, local transportation while in Spain, hotel costs, meals, etc.). Even donations at the $10 level will help us immensely in achieving our goal of representing the UT at this prestigious event, and in sharing our music with the world.”" - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)

State news agency Xinhua said law enforcement teams, which started the patrols on May 1, and have encountered 83 cases of "improper behavior", including hawking, begging and the distribution of advertising flyers. Costumes and masks are likely to attract the attention of other passengers, Xinhua quoted Liang Jianwei, vice head of the Beijing municipal traffic administration corps, as saying. "For the first half-century of Triple Crown races, the average name length of horses was between about 7.5 and 8.5 letters. Between 1910 and 1959, that average name length inched its way up to nine letters. Then, starting in the 1960s, the names started to grow to their current length -- just under 11 letters on average. It may not sound like a huge change, but it's an objective measure of the growing eccentricity of names." - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)

"Still, these lesser trolls are motivated by the same sense of entitlement that clogs online fora with death threats, vile language, and other troll bombast. We're told to ignore them, and while that's probably the best policy for preserving the general peace, I often feel compelled to engage with trolls. Trolling--whether it's death threats or just persistent attempts to derail and control online conversations--is a form of interpersonal violence. I know a bit about interpersonal violence, and I'm always looking to widen my knowledge base. Thus I'm inclined to see trolls as a research opportunity. Plus I have ethical concerns with strict "don't feed the trolls" policies. After all, it may be good manners to ignore rude bodily noises in public, but when it's reached the point that people can't hear each other over the flatulence, someone has to take action. It's the same with trolls. Sometimes you have to open a window, or you'll asphyxiate." - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)

Police say it became clear both men were under the influence of a drug of some sort. Barrie police and EMS, with the help of dogs, found two 19-year-old men who were "silently staring off into the sky." Police say it took several attempts to talk to the men to determine they had consumed an illicit drug and were extremely disoriented. They were taken to hospital for their safety, and police say no charges will be laid." - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)

"Recent sightings of cobras in Taichung's Daguan Village (達觀) believed to have been released into the wild in nearby Miaoli County by religious groups have unsettled residents, who are calling on the local government to take action. Residents of Daguan -- which lies directly across the Daan River (大安溪) from Miaoli County's Taian Township (泰安) -- said they have recently sighted an increased number of snakes. Daguan Elementary School staffer Pilin Yapu said on Facebook that the snakes must be those rumored to have been released into the wild by religious groups, adding that locals have reported seeing more than 20 snakes over the past month." - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)
"Miaoli County Department of Agriculture Director Hsu Man-hsien (許滿顯) said that experts have identified the snakes as the Naja Atra — or the common cobra — which usually resides on the eastern plains of Taiwan. How Florida's Proud Open Government Laws Lead to the Shame of "Florida Man" News Stories | Miami New Times (http://www.miaminewtimes.... http://images1.miaminewti... )

"those same laws are also the reason your mugshot appears online days after your arrest, and those laws make it incredibly easy for journalists to write about weird Florida news stories. You'll notice something when you read so many "Weird Florida" news stories. They almost always include the phrase "according to the arrest report." As journalists, all we have to do in most cases is call the police department and ask for an arrest report, and the cops are required to give it to us. Nowadays a lot of cops simply email the reports, and some departments even post arrest records online. Some of the more dedicated weird-Florida-news reporters go through batches of arrest reports at a time. Once you have the report, you pretty much have something to base a story (though always keep in mind that when you see the words "according to arrest report" absent other sourcing, you are just reading the police's version of events). The process isn't quite as easy in many other states. " - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)

"Among the gajillion emoji campaigns out there right now, here's a clever one. Wieden + Kennedy London creatives Jason Scott and Joris Philippart recently had an idea for how to use emojis to help endangered animals. So, the agency approached the WWF with a proposal. The result is the #EndangeredEmoji campaign, which launches just in time for Endangered Species Day this Friday. The key insight was that 17 animal emojis that people use every day actually depict endangered species (see the list below). The WWF today tweeted out an image of the 17 animals, and asked people to join the campaign by retweeting the post." - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)

Wild boar causes havoc in Hong Kong shopping mall after falling through ceiling - video - Asia - World - The Independent (http://www.independent.co... )

"As shoppers perused the shops for the latest bargains, workers in the Kingkow store were running for cover after a 55-pound boar fell through the shop's ceiling. The animal eventually made its way into the children's clothes shop and climbed above the store's false ceiling, before falling through the ceiling and onto the floor. About 10 police officers then arrived but were unable to prevent the boisterous boar from knocking down a number of mannequins and causing general chaos in the shop. After cornering the beast, police were able to restrain the boar so that it could be injected with a tranquiliser by a vet. The metre-long animal was then taken by Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department officers and released back into the wild. " - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)

Texas May Require County Jails to Allow In-Person Visits | Dallas Observer (http://blogs.dallasobserv... http://blogs.dallasobserv... )
1 decade ago from Bookmarklet - Comment - Hide - - - (Edit | Remove) - More...
"The state of Texas may soon mandate that prisoners in county custody be given at least two in person visits a week, a sensible move that staves off the prison complex's ongoing effort to automate and profit from jail visits. The move comes on the heels of a series of controversies surrounding the introduction of video visitation at jails around the state. Last fall, an attempt to replace all in-person visits at Dallas County Jail -- initiated by Securus, a company that provides video visitation technology -- failed after activists and Dallas County Judge Clay Jenkins fought the plan. In Denton, however, Securus video visits are currently the only visits available, despite a lawsuit. Dallas state Represenative Eric Johnson, after following all the goings on in his backyard, wrote a bill that would require all county jails to allow inmates at least two 20-minute in-person visits a week. Late Monday afternoon, his bill passed a Texas House voice vote." - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)
""It doesn't limit the availability of video visitation; it simply requires that in-person visitation in our jails be left intact," Johnson said Monday of his bill. "It relates to county jails, not prisons -- 60 percent of those who are there are innocent, waiting for trial, and couldn't afford the bond to get out of of jail." That echoes the arguments made in the Dallas fight over the potential Securus contract in September. "When people are in jail, communication with their family is one of the best ways to encourage them to take action so they won't be back in jail again and to have their best outcome after they're out of jail," Jenkins said at the time. Research supports this." - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)
