Texas May Require County Jails to Allow In-Person Visits | Dallas Observer (http://blogs.dallasobserv... http://blogs.dallasobserv... )
1 decade ago from Bookmarklet - Comment - Hide - - - (Edit | Remove) - More...
"The state of Texas may soon mandate that prisoners in county custody be given at least two in person visits a week, a sensible move that staves off the prison complex's ongoing effort to automate and profit from jail visits. The move comes on the heels of a series of controversies surrounding the introduction of video visitation at jails around the state. Last fall, an attempt to replace all in-person visits at Dallas County Jail -- initiated by Securus, a company that provides video visitation technology -- failed after activists and Dallas County Judge Clay Jenkins fought the plan. In Denton, however, Securus video visits are currently the only visits available, despite a lawsuit. Dallas state Represenative Eric Johnson, after following all the goings on in his backyard, wrote a bill that would require all county jails to allow inmates at least two 20-minute in-person visits a week. Late Monday afternoon, his bill passed a Texas House voice vote." - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)
""It doesn't limit the availability of video visitation; it simply requires that in-person visitation in our jails be left intact," Johnson said Monday of his bill. "It relates to county jails, not prisons -- 60 percent of those who are there are innocent, waiting for trial, and couldn't afford the bond to get out of of jail." That echoes the arguments made in the Dallas fight over the potential Securus contract in September. "When people are in jail, communication with their family is one of the best ways to encourage them to take action so they won't be back in jail again and to have their best outcome after they're out of jail," Jenkins said at the time. Research supports this." - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)

A Grisly Find Under a Supermarket Illuminates France's Medieval History - NYTimes.com (http://www.nytimes.com/20... http://static01.nyt.com/i... )
1 decade ago from Bookmarklet - Comment - Hide - - - (Edit | Remove) - More...
"Past the racks of hair accessories on the ground floor of the Monoprix supermarket on the corner of the Rue Réaumur and the Boulevard de Sébastopol in the Second Arrondissement, there is a door marked staff only. Slip through that passageway and turn left down a spiraling metal staircase into the basement. Past pallets of juice and soda bottles, down another flight of stairs, you will find a grim reminder of Paris's history: a mass grave, with row upon row of medieval skeletons, 316 in total. Archaeologists believe the discovery, unearthed in January, is part of the cemetery of a medieval hospital called the Hôpital de la Trinité that used to stand nearby. The long-buried mass grave is a reminder that Paris, for all its surface grandeur, is still replete with undiscovered archaeological treasures, some grand, others much more grisly. For archaeologists, though, grisly can be good. "Each dig is an event, but a cemetery is even better, because you have a real population at hand," said Boris Bove, a historian and professor at the Université Paris 8 who recently co-wrote a book on the French capital in the Middle Ages. "Most of the time, you only stumble upon buildings."" - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)

Cow who was issued admit card does not appear for examination : India, News - India Today (http://indiatoday.intoday... http://media2.intoday.in/... )

"A Budgam resident, who managed to get hall ticket for his Brown Cow to write a professional entrance examination, on Sunday did not turn up with the bovine for the paper at the allocated centre in Srinagar, saying he only wanted to convey a message about the "flaw" in the system. "I only wanted to convey a message to the authorities about the flaw in the system. I never wanted to make a mockery of the system," Abdul Rashid Bhat, the owner of the now-famous cow, told PTI." - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)
"In an attempt to expose the loopholes in Jammu and Kashmir Board of Professional Entrance Examination's (BOPEE) online registration system, Bhat had managed to acquire an admit card for his cow to write the paper for admission to Diploma in polytechnical college. The admit card was issued by the BOPEE in the name of Kachir Gaaw (Brown Cow) which is supposedly daughter of Gura Dand (Red Bull). Bhat, after obtaining the hall ticket last week, had said it was his legal right to bring the bovine for writing the examination. "Had I gone ahead with that, there would be no difference between me and an animal. I would become a two-legged animal then," he said. " - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)

"The seniors at Arkansas City High School think the building will be unnecessary after the class of 2015 graduates. The Winfield Daily Courier reports (http://bit.ly/1IVwfri ) that as a senior prank, the seniors listed the Arkansas City High School building for sale on Craigslist. The ad says the class members don't need the building anymore, but do need money for college. It notes the school offers a lot of parking space — or even room for a buyer's cattle, and whoever buys it might even learn something. The ad lists a price of $2,015 but says all offers will be considered. District spokeswoman Alisha Call gave the seniors credit for being clever, but says the building isn't for sale. She says the district has asked Craigslist to remove the ad." - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)

"Superior tripled the amount of care it was offering Bates. "So, less than a week after your story posted I signed a plan from Superior today providing me with 140 hrs of PCA services," Bates wrote in an email yesterday. "I'm obviously really pleased to have a resolution after all of this time, but it's frustrating to know that if I'd reached out to the media 8 months ago I could've saved a ton of time and stress." Which is great, both for Bates, who gets the care she needs, and for Eric Nicholson, who gets to include self-congratulatory quotes in his story. But why did it take eight months and an unflattering news story for Bates to get her hours? And what about the justifications the the state gave me for limiting the hours -- basically that federal Medicaid rules are very strict and don't permit the state to pay for in-home care when a nursing home is cheaper?" - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)

And, by us working with the Special Operations Forces, we are able to provide information to citizens who were concerned about it." Yes, but what if those questions are idiotic? Greedy pig traps woman in car - National - NZ Herald News (http://www.nzherald.co.nz... http://media.nzherald.co.... )

"The ''big pig'' - a kunekune cross - climbed halfway into the vehicle of a parked motorist at an intersection near Aramoana yesterday afternoon, Dunedin City Council animal control officer Alister Wilden said. ''He was hungry and a person has stopped and they had some food and he's tried climbing into the car and trapped the person,'' Mr Wilden said. The woman, parked at the intersection of Purakaunui Rd and Heyward Point Rd, was freed thanks to the quick thinking of a passer by. ''A passer by has grabbed the hind legs of the pig and dragged him out of the car,'' he said. The pig then returned to his paddock, accompanied by the passer by and without incident. The pig weighed ''probably 150kg'', Mr Wilden said." - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)

"You are not Elizabeth Bennet. Christ. That's the only reason you clicked on this, isn't it? You misunderstand yourself entirely. You have never been Elizabeth Bennet. No one in your entire acquaintanceship -- in your entire life -- has for even one second considered you to be the Elizabeth Bennet of your social circle. No one thinks of you at all. You think that because reading Jane Austen makes you feel understood that she would have approved of or even liked you; nothing could be further from the truth. You are not playfully impertinent, you are coarse and often intentionally cruel. You say unkind things about friends who are not there to defend themselves and pretend you do not mean it; worse, you say kind things about people who are there to think well of you and you do not mean that either. No one has ever called you "plucky" and no one will ever silently admire your good qualities while you play the piano. You should have been shot into the vacuum of space on your thirteenth birthday." - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)

What Does It Take To Become A Professional Faerie Princess? (http://io9.com/what-does-... http://i.kinja-img.com/ga... )

"Faerie training, it turns out, is quite rigorous at Happily Ever Laughter. The performers need to learn how to twist balloon animals, perform magic and puppet shows, and meet the company's particularly high face-painting standards. (Richman confesses that she wasn't a natural; it took a lot of practice for her to master the ropes.) And performers have to develop social tools as well as performance skills -- things to say that will make the children feel more at ease with this strange person on their special day. After all, Richman points out, you've been invited to someone's big celebration "this momentous thing. So it's important to become part of that." But for Richman, it's not just about the skills. It's about wanting to insert a little magic into children's lives." - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)

"The Parisian artist Jean-Michel Othoniel's gilded glass fountains won't be the only things dancing at opening parties for the restored Water Theater grove in the gardens of the ChÃteau de Versailles in May. L.A. Dance Project will present the latest addition to its repertoire in the newly landscaped space on May 10 and 11, with a guest solo performance by the jookin street dance phenomenon Lil Buck, starring as the sun god Apollo. Conceived by the company's founder, Benjamin Millepied, now dance director at the Paris Opera Ballet, the 10-minute divertissement, "O'de," takes its inspiration from 17th-century dances created and performed by King Louis XIV in the original Water Theater. Louis himself used to dance the role of Apollo in his own baroque projection of soft power, wearing a golden mask that gave him his nickname, the Sun King." - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)

"Some 31 percent of the men and 11 percent of the women whose records Ms. Reid examined managed to achieve the benefits of a more moderate work schedule without explicitly asking for it. They made an effort to line up clients who were local, reducing the need for travel. When they skipped work to spend time with their children or spouse, they didn't call attention to it. One team on which several members had small children agreed among themselves to cover for one another so that everyone could have more flexible hours. A male junior manager described working to have repeat consulting engagements with a company near enough to his home that he could take care of it with day trips. "I try to head out by 5, get home at 5:30, have dinner, play with my daughter," he said, adding that he generally kept weekend work down to two hours of catching up on email. Despite the limited hours, he said: "I know what clients are expecting. So I deliver above that." He received a high performance review and a promotion." - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)

He knocked, and heard what sounded like people getting dressed before Daniel Goralski, 29, and Julie Dahms emerged, clothed. Goralski at first gave a false name before properly identifying himself. Best asked the couple what they were thinking, and why didn't they at least lock the door. Dahms she and Goralski "got excited because they hadn't seen each other in a couple of days." "Persuaded by the meat scraps I scattered outside, the fox appeared more often. One late summer night, as Greg and I celebrated our first anniversary, the fox tentatively nosed its way onto the deck, toward the smell of grilled lamb. As we toasted with cava and watched the stars appear one by one, we tossed the meaty bones out into the yard for our visitor, whom we now called Little One. He became a regular guest at my house. Evenings, Little One showed up, setting off the motion sensor light outside, and out I'd come, food in hand. Sometimes he sat facing the door, looking at the house with the big unblinking eyes of a Victorian beggar. There were a million reasons not to feed the fox, the least of which was the bigger predators he might attract. But it was too late. He'd developed a habit of sitting on the deck at the top of the steps, just as Elvis had, watching the yard from his perch. Ridiculously, I worried he didn't have enough food. There were even nights when I went barefoot out into the snow to look for him, calling his name." - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)
