I Torment My Husband By EyeBombing All His Stuff | The Everywhereist (http://www.everywhereist.... https://farm9.staticflick... https://farm1.staticflick... https://farm8.staticflick... )

"Several times over the last week or so, my beloved has walked into the living room and said, “Damn it, I really wish we had tissues down here.” Now, keep in mind, there is a bathroom on that first floor with rolls and rolls of toilet paper in it, but apparently my husband is the Queen of England, and using t.p. to blow your nose is an activity worthy of serfs. His comments led me to conclude that we were out of tissues altogether. That was until I checked the bathroom closet in Rand’s office. I found boxes and boxes of them, as though I’d been stockpiling tissues in anticipation of harsh rationing during some inevitable future Kleenex War. There were just sitting there. IN HIS OFFICE. I grabbed one of the many tissue boxes in the cabinet, intending to bring it downstairs. But I just couldn’t bring myself to do it, because if I did, how on earth would Rand know how upset I was? I can’t just tell him how I feel. This isn’t France." - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)

Snakes on a bus spark investigation in China: report - Yahoo News UK (https://uk.news.yahoo.com... https://s.yimg.com/bt/api... )

"Police in China are investigating after 15 boxes filled with live snakes were found on a bus, state media reported on Saturday. The snakes were packed alongside containers holding toads and rats in the luggage compartment of a coach in central China's Hubei province, the official Xinhua news agency said. Many of the vehicle's 53 passengers were "terrified" and ran away when the animals were discovered, 200 km into the coach's journey, it added. Xinhua said transportation of live animals must be approved by Chinese transport and quarantine authorities, adding that the driver of the coach failed to show police certificates granting permission. An investigation is underway, the news agency said." - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)

Two Jesuit priests honored for their service to Taiwan - Taipei Times (http://www.taipeitimes.co... )
1 decade ago from Bookmarklet - Comment - Hide - - - (Edit | Remove) - More...
"Two Jesuit priests on Monday received Plum Blossom Cards from the National Immigration Agency, giving them permanent resident status in recognition of their selfless love and devotion to the country over the past decade. The two priests — Barry Martinson from the US and Yves Nalet from France — have worked for many years in the mountainous areas of Hsinchu County. While residents of Jianshih (尖石) and Wufong (五峰) townships do not have much materially, their faith has become a source of strength, and many who grew up going to church in the villages said they have been deeply influenced by the priests. “They have not only brought religion, but strength, which allows you to believe that love changes everything,” one parishioner said. Martinson, from California, came to work with the Chingchuan tribe (清泉部落) in Wufong more than four decades ago. Alone with no friends, Martinson said he “wanted to leave and go back to my hometown.” He called his mother for advice and she encouraged him to stay on for at least a year, which has now turned into 41 years." - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)

The Manul Cat Is The Most Expressive Cat In The World | Bored Panda (http://www.boredpanda.com... http://static.boredpanda.... http://static.boredpanda.... )

"Manul cats are a near-threatened wild species found in the grasslands and montane steppes of Central Asia. More commonly known as Pallas' cats, they are distinguished by having round pupils, short legs, and a flat-looking face with wide-set ears that can create some of the funniest expressions in the feline kingdom. The Pallas' cats high-elevation habitat of up to 5,000m (more than 16,000ft) results in a weakened immune system from lack of exposure to viral infections. For this reason, survival rates are low in captivity, and new litters see a mortality rate of up to 44.9%. Although these fun photos make the Pallas' cat seem like an interesting pet with an expressive face, their solitary and wild nature, as well as their high mortality rate at low altitudes, restricts them primarily to professional zoos." - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)

"A former convict carved out a career path by teaching himself the art of food sculpture, winning a silver medal in an international culinary competition and volunteering to help juvenile delinquents turn over a new leaf. Hsu Fu-chuan (許榑荃), 36, said he had committed several criminal offenses and served some time in prison when he was young and impetuous, but the sight of his family fretting over his future made the rebellious young man mend his ways. He turned to the food industry with his family’s support and became interested in food sculpture." - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)

Let it go to peer review: discussion of Frozen is academic at Symfrozium | Film | The Guardian (http://www.theguardian.co... http://i.guim.co.uk/stati... )

"This is Symfrozium, the world’s first academic conference devoted to Disney’s record-breaking 2013 animation. There have been similar events dedicated to film franchises such as Harry Potter or companies such as Marvel, but nobody here can recall one focused on a single movie, and certainly not one that has been previewed by BBC Radio 1 and pre-emptively criticised by the Sun and the Daily Mail. The conference filled up well in advance and attracted enough submissions to fill another day or two. “I’ve been really surprised by the attention,” says Samantha Langsdale, who teaches the study of religions at Soas, University of London. “I have no idea why so many newspapers want to cover this, because academic conferences about popular media happen all the time. So why this?”" - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)

"MEN often face pressure to measure up as alpha males, to “wolf up” as it were. Alpha male connotes the man who at every moment demonstrates that he’s in total control in the home, and who away from home can become snarling and aggressive. This alpha male stereotype comes from a misunderstanding of the real thing. In fact, the male wolf is an exemplary male role model. By observing wolves in free-living packs in Yellowstone National Park, I’ve seen that the leadership of the ranking male is not forced, not domineering and not aggressive to those on his team. “The main characteristic of an alpha male wolf,” the veteran wolf researcher Rick McIntyre told me as we were watching gray wolves, “is a quiet confidence, quiet self-assurance. You know what you need to do; you know what’s best for your pack. You lead by example. You’re very comfortable with that. You have a calming effect.” The point is, alpha males are not aggressive. They don’t need to be. “Think of an emotionally secure man, or a great champion. Whatever he needed to prove is already proven,” he said." - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)

"To give you an idea of the waking nightmare that is my life, I’d like to walk you through today’s Paleo abomination, in which I endeavored to make something called “carrot cake cookies” – a name which is at best a misnomer, and at worst a cruel mockery. The recipe describes them as “savory cookies” which is something that, if your blood sugar is low enough, you can almost pretend is a real thing. But it’s not. Savory cookies do not exist. There are real, honest-to-god cookies, which are filled with sugar and flour and all sorts of wonderful things that some random hot guy said I can’t eat. And then there are crumbly pucks of carrot and nut that are held together by the indelible resilience of failure and good intentions. I ate three in a matter of seconds. And you know what? They weren’t bad … though they were seasoned by a bit of forbidden honey and the salt of my own tears." - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)

ClickHole writers explain their craft: How the Onion’s Internet parody spinoff became the best thing online. (http://www.slate.com/arti... https://pbs.twimg.com/med... )
1 decade ago from Bookmarklet - Comment - Hide - - - (Edit | Remove) - More...
"On a warm day at the end of March, the writers and editors of ClickHole assembled in a sunny conference room for a headlines meeting. (I could describe the conference room, but instead will direct you to the ClickHole story “6 Tips for Throwing the Perfect Boardroom Tantrum,” which, thriftily, was photographed in that very space.) The first order of business was to grapple with whether a comedy site should even observe April Fools’ Day. There was general dismay around the table at the thought of the lame April Fools’ pranks other websites would pull the next day. “God, they’re so self-aware, and then everyone Likes them,” moaned Jamie Brew, the site’s associate editor. “Should we tweet a photo of Chris Webber that says ‘Teach the Controversy’ on it?” “I like the Christmas idea,” someone said, referring to an agreeably daffy April Fools’ pitch on the last page of the printed ideas memo the writers were reviewing—a shareable image of a Christmas tree and the words Today is Christmas. Share if you agree! “Well,” chuffed writer Cullen Crawford, italics deeply embedded in his tone: “April Fools’ is Christmas to pranksters like us.” He turned to look at me, as did everyone else at the conference table. “Can you write that I was wearing sunglasses when I said that?”" - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)

"Indeed, a site launched as a parody of BuzzFeed now has a more complicated and fascinating relationship to the social Web than BuzzFeed does. Somehow the exact market forces that make me and much of the rest of media rend our garments and bite our nails have created in the wilds of Chicago the exact thing we mourn, or at least anticipate mourning: perfectly packaged, finely tuned editorial brilliance. Reading ClickHole no longer feels like reading a parody of BuzzFeed, or Slate, or Upworthy, or ViralNova. It doesn’t feel like a parody at all. Reading one ClickHole piece feels like reading your Facebook feed for an hour. ClickHole is the ultrapure product of a refinery at the end of that Keystone pipeline of crap shared by your uncle, by your pushy co-worker, by that guy you went to high school with. To read ClickHole is to read the institutional voice of the Internet. No one is responsible for the place we all live now. It just appeared. We are all, every one of us, only here to make sure it goes viral." - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)

At CatCon, Breaking a Stereotype in Ears and Whiskers - NYTimes.com (http://www.nytimes.com/20... http://static01.nyt.com/i... http://static01.nyt.com/i... )

"They arrived wearing whiskers and ears. They purred over new litter fragrances, and pawed through the cat clothes. Hissing? Well, the line was long for that keynote speech: “Photographing Cats — It Looks Easy, but It’s Not.” Debunking the cat lady myth, it turns out, is easier said than done. This was the first CatCon, billed as a celebration of the stylish side of cat fancying. More than 10,000 people crowded into a downtown convention hall here over the weekend to shop for cat-centric merchandise (for people, mostly), have their pictures taken with celebrity Internet cats (such as Lil Bub, famous for her dwarfism), and attend cat-focused panels and speeches (“Goodbye Dowdy, Hello Gorgeous: Debunking the Cat Lady Myth”). There were also “caticure” stations, where Aveda technicians gave visitors manicures and decorated fingernails with cat stickers." - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)

"“The problem with cat birthdays is that you never really know who the guest of honor is, so I just love this,” said Jeanne Boukidis, a browsing attendee. Ms. Boukidis said she sometimes puts clothes on her cats, Jazzy and Harvey. “It’s kind of like a living Build-A-Bear,” she added, referring to the personalized teddy bear shops. “I might be back for that party hat,” she shouted over her shoulder. Like Ms. Boukidis, a lot of visitors did not seem particularly worried if they came across as cat ladies, crazy or otherwise. “I wear my crazy cat lady badge proudly,” said Pat Preston, who flew in from Fredericksburg, Va., to attend the event. Ms. Preston did not have an actual badge. But she was wearing novelty cat glasses complete with ears and dangling plastic whiskers. Any Los Angeles event worth its salt has celebrities. So Mayim Bialik, the actress known for “The Big Bang Theory” and “Blossom,” was on hand on Saturday to encourage cat adoption through PetSmart Charities. She had read her CatCon script. “This event is a great opportunity to change the face of the crazy cat lady,” Ms. Bialik said. “It’s still one of those stereotypes that needs to be demolished. We’ve come a long way, but we have a long way to go.”" - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)

Man attempts to sell live shark outside Fort Lauderdale Publix - WSVN-TV - 7NEWS Miami Ft. Lauderdale News, Weather, Deco (http://www.wsvn.com/story... http://wsvn.images.worldn... )

"A South Florida man had plans to turn a catch into cash, as he attempted to sell a live shark outside a Publix Thursday evening. Shoppers outside a Publix Supermarket on 17th Street in Fort Lauderdale said a man hauled in the five-foot nurse shark, dropped it on the sidewalk and tried to sell it. Friday evening, 7News caught up to Patrick Lanier, the man who tried to sell the live shark, and he said he reeled in the marine predator on the Intracoastal Waterway. "I felt like a leprechaun, like I struck gold," he said. Lanier said he was hoping to make about $100 from selling the shark, but no one seemed interested. "On top of it, it's not on ice. It's just sitting there on the concrete," said Publix shopper James Douglas. "Who's going to buy something like that? I'm just saying, it's like worthless. It's like saying, 'This animal's worthless. We cannot do anything. It’s so aggressive and so mean,” said Lokman. Lokman said he and his wife were sitting in their car in a parking lot because they could not get into their home. USA Freedom Act: Before Snowden, librarians were the anti-surveillance heroes. (http://www.slate.com/blog... http://www.slate.com/cont... )
1 decade ago from Bookmarklet - Comment - Hide - - - (Edit | Remove) - More...
"Specifically, the section of the Patriot Act that expired is Section 215, which is commonly nicknamed the “library-records provision” because it called on librarians to hand over patron reading and computer records when requested by law enforcement under a Section 215 request. The law further paired government requests for information with gag orders, so if librarians were asked to hand over patron data, they legally weren't allowed to alert anyone. Librarians didn't take this lightly. For more than a decade, the community has stood in opposition to the Patriot Act, with the Section 215 provision at the top of its list of complaints. The community claimed that intellectual freedom and the right to research could be preserved only if patron privacy was respected. Section 215’s sunset does not mean that the NSA doesn't have an arsenal of other options for secretly retrieving peoples' personal details without a warrant, nor does it mean that the surveillance powers stripped from the Patriot Act can never again be reinstated. But it does mark an occasion to look back at the wave of anti-surveillance activism against this one notorious law. Before there was Snowden, there were librarians." - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)

"I ended up fixating on dance because there’s athleticism and discipline, but also because it extends into a realm of self-expression I’ve never been able to access. Dancers seem so in tune with their bodies, so at ease with the ways they occupy space. I’ve spent hours watching YouTube videos of choreography on repeat, wondering what it must feel like to understand your body well enough to use it as a mode of expression. This sentiment eludes me. I flail around like a newborn giraffe. At the same time, I’ve wondered if some dancers feel a rupture in their physical awareness that’s similar to mine. After all, dancers are asked to push their bodies to an extreme, and sometimes those bodies break. Sometimes there is a distance between what we expect of our bodies and what they can give us. Where does dance make room for queerness? Between the rigid stereotypes about gender and the narrow range of bodies that are deemed acceptable in classical dance, how do queer dancers go back to the barre, day after day, without feeling alienated? " - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)
