‘Gua sha’ causes flesh-eating disease - Taipei Times (http://www.taipeitimes.co... http://www.taipeitimes.co... )
1 decade ago from Bookmarklet - Comment - Hide - - - (Edit | Remove) - More...
"Gua sha involves repeatedly scraping lubricated skin with smooth-edged tools to produce light bruising. The practice is believed to stimulate blood flow and treat heatstroke. “A 40-year-old man from Taichung’s Fongyuan District (豐原) was recently rushed to an emergency department after developing bacterial infections on his inner thighs following a self-applied gua sha session,” Feng Yuan Hospital Department of Surgery director Wu Chien-ting (吳建廷) said yesterday. When the man arrived at the hospital, Wu said red and swollen ulcers were found on both of his inner thighs. He also had a fever of 39°C. Wu said the complications could have arisen because the patient used an unsterilized tool to carry out the therapy and also caused minor skin injuries in the process. The man later developed necrotizing fasciitis — a serious bacterial skin infection that spreads quickly and can cause tissue death — and was required to undergo emergency debridement and irrigation, and was put on antibiotics. “He regained his health and was discharged from hospital after two weeks of treatment,” Wu said." - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)

It's 'fake meth,' man tells deputy - Spokesman.com - June 17, 2015 (http://www.spokesman.com/... )

"A man arrested for driving with a suspended license told a Spokane County sheriff’s deputy a bag of white crystals was “fake meth.” Thomas Kammers, 42, is being held in the Spokane County Jail on a $5,000 bond after he was pulled over Monday afternoon near North Stevens Street and West Houston Avenue. A Sheriff’s Office news release said a deputy “observed a 1992 Honda traveling on a completely flat tire” with license plates that expired in September 2014. The deputy stopped the car and arrested Kammers, who had a plastic bag on him. Not believing the fake-meth story, the deputy field-tested the crystals for methamphetamine. They tested positive. Kammers faces charges for possession and driving with a suspended license." - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)

What Were They Thinking? Charleston Newspaper Ran Gun Store Ad Over Shooting Coverage | Adweek (http://www.adweek.com/adf... http://www.adweek.com/fil... )
1 decade ago from Bookmarklet - Comment - Hide - - - (Edit | Remove) - More...
"One month after a Florida newspaper called its gun show ad placement over murder coverage a "regrettable coincidence," Charleston's Post and Courier has trotted out the exact same excuse for a similar judgment error. In today's example, the South Carolina newspaper ran a sticky-note ad for a gun store over its coverage of Wednesday's horrific killings of nine church-goers at Charleston's Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church. "The front-page sticky note that was attached to some home delivery newspapers on the same day as this tragedy is a deeply regrettable coincidence," the paper told a Facebook commenter, according to Poynter. "We apologize to those who were offended." These apologies (especially those that seem quite literally copied and pasted from previous instances of ridiculous ad placement) do little to appease critics and, if anything, highlight the newspaper industry's repeated inability to show common sense when it comes to ads that are 100 percent guaranteed by their very nature to appear over high-profile news stories." - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)

Kendo contests cap primary graduation - Taipei Times (http://www.taipeitimes.co... http://www.taipeitimes.co... )

"In an unconventional graduation ceremony at a primary school in Changhua County on Monday, six students had to defeat three kendo masters, including the school principal, as a graduation requirement at the commencement of a new journey. Minquan Elementary School principal Lin Chao-ching (林昭青) said she has practiced kendo for 30 years and is a fifth dan, or rank, kendo expert — eighth dan being the highest attainable rank in the sport — and she trains all the school’s students, 35 in total, in kendo twice a week as an extracurricular activity in a bid to promote the sport and improve students’ health." - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)
"In Monday’s ceremony in Fangyuan Township (芳苑), the graduates faced three matches against their kendo coach, Chiu Wei-te (邱威得); Republic of China Kendo Association president Lai Kun-huang (賴坤煌) and Lin herself, she said. Knowing that they had to take on the principal and win all three matches in front of a cheering crowd to be granted their diplomas, the students said that they were quite nervous at first, but the emotion turned to excitement when they cleared the first two matches. In full armor, the six students, one after another, swung their bamboo swords against their opponents in the matches, expressing their fighting spirit in full and obtaining their diplomas." - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)

Hawaii Will Turn Old City Buses Into Mobile Homeless Shelters With Showers | Bored Panda (http://www.boredpanda.com... http://static.boredpanda.... http://static.boredpanda.... )

"Old city buses in Hawaii are going to be converted into homeless shelters if architecture firm Group 70 International is successful. The vehicles are to operate in fleets, with different units dedicated to different purposes, from living spaces to recreation rooms. May Ry Kim of Group 70 International told Hawaii News that the design “is based on the premise that you could walk in to a hardware store, buy everything you need in one go and build everything with no trade skills,” so that it can be built by a team of untrained volunteers. LIFT, the volunteer organization helping to execute the project hopes to build one bus every weekend this summer. 70 buses and all the material required for renovations will be donated. Line character rice paddy is harvested in Pingtung - Taipei Times (http://www.taipeitimes.co... http://www.taipeitimes.co... )

"A multihued rice paddy in Pingtung County that was planted so that the rice stalks would resemble Line characters was harvested on Monday, with the rice offered for sale over the Internet to raise money for social welfare services. The paddy, on the border of Nanzhou (南州) and Donggang (東港) townships, was planted with rice stalks of different hues in a design created by Lin Ching-yuan (林清源), and attracted more than 660,000 visitors over the past three months, Pingtung County Government officials said. Pingtung County Commissioner Pan Meng-an (潘孟安) said the event demonstrated the capability of average farmers, adding that the proceeds from the sale of the 4.5 tonnes of rice via the Line Mart platform would fund social welfare subsidies in the county. Line is a Japanese smartphone communications application that was launched in 2011." - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)

Police in stand-off with garden ornament they thought was snake - Telegraph (http://www.telegraph.co.u... http://i.telegraph.co.uk/... )

"Police were involved in a stand-off with a "snake" after being called by a worried resident - before realising it was a garden ornament. Officers were called to an address in Sutton, south-west London, when a passer-by phoned the RSPCA saying a snake was "on the loose". The RSPCA passed the information onto police at just after 6.30am on Friday and a patrol car went to the scene. After arriving at around 7.17am, officers stood and watched the "reptile", but kept their distance from the "venomous adder", which was "lying very still on a patio" at a block of flats. Soon after, officers were told by a local resident that the "snake" was in fact a garden ornament. " - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)

Mother hen cares for duckling brood at recreational farm - Taipei Times (http://www.taipeitimes.co... http://www.taipeitimes.co... )
1 decade ago from Bookmarklet - Comment - Hide - - - (Edit | Remove) - More...
"The unlikely sight of a hen minding a flock of ducklings is now a regular fixture at a recreational farm in Hsinchu County’s Jhudong Township (竹東). Farm owner Lin Jien-cheng (林建成) attributed the peculiar development to the arrangement of the farm, with hatcheries for chickens and ducks placed in close proximity. Consequently, ducks and hens often return to the wrong hatchery from foraging and proceed to sit on the clutches of eggs indiscriminately. Five days ago, as 12 ducklings broke through their egg shells and opened their eyes, one of the first things they saw was a black-feathered hen, Lin said. The 12 ducklings quickly latched onto the hen and, surprisingly, the hen became their adoptive mother and began caring for them." - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)
I don't remember if this was true or fiction, but I seem to remember a similar case, and the poor hen freaked out when the ducklings kept going into the water. :-) - bentley - - (Edit | Remove)

Longshan Temple halves censers used in worship - Taipei Times (http://www.taipeitimes.co... http://www.taipeitimes.co... )

"Longshan Temple (龍山寺) in Taipei yesterday closed access to more than half of its censers following concerns over incense smoke polluting the surrounding area. Red lids capped four of the temple’s seven censers, as the temple prepared to move them into storage. “Doctors at National Taiwan University found that PM2.5 levels near the temple had reached frightening levels,” temple affairs manager Chang Hsueh-ling (張雪玲) said. “Longshan Temple’s deity is full of mercy and wants worshipers to be healthy and at peace.” Chang said the temple’s board had cast lots three times to ask the permission of Longshan’s main deity — Kuanyin, the goddess of mercy — before passing the new policy." - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)
"Under the new policy, the temple’s lesser deities are to be allocated only one censer, while the two larger central censers devoted to the temple’s major deities are to remain. Worshipers at the temple customarily insert one stick of incense into each of the temple’s censers. As part of the new policy, the temple will begin providing three incense sticks for free to any worshiper who requests them, Chang said. Worshipers are also to be encouraged to use “heart incense,” because a sincere prayer would be heard with or without physical smoke, she added." - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)

"A Palatka man said he snapped a picture of a raccoon on top of an alligator in the Ocala National Forest Sunday morning. Richard Jones said he and his family were walking along the Oaklawaha River watching alligators when his son walked through some palm fronds to get a good picture. Jones said his son must have startled the raccoon, which stumbled toward the water and hopped on top of the gator that was nearby. Jones was able to quickly take the unique photo before the raccoon scurried back on land." - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)

"This is the studio ballerina Jenelle Figgins, 25, calls home. Born and raised in Washington, D.C., the African-American dancer is in her third season at the institute. (The DTH doesn't rank its dancers — instead of being a "soloist" or a "principal," dancers are just part of the company.) Her face glowers on a large poster in the lobby for the show Power. On Pointe. Figgins grew up with a black dance mentor and an older sister who was also in the Dance Theatre of Harlem. For those reasons, the general lack of diverse ballet dancers never deterred her. "I always had examples of black women in ballet in my line of sight," Figgins explains in an interview with Mashable. It grounded her but didn't blind her to bigotry. Outside of predominantly black institutions, she was aware she'd "always be the only one like me in the room." In college, she took a class at a studio in D.C. (she won't reveal the name, but says it's "prominent" in the dance world). As she was leaving the studio, she saw two young white girls who looked about 13 or 14. "This school has really gone down since they’ve been letting black kids into the school," Figgins overheard. It was a sharp reminder that others could consider her different, or lesser than as a dancer, simply because of race. It made her wonder — who taught those girls institutions had to be white in order to stay respectable?" - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)
"In ballet, uniformity is next to godliness. There's an old argument that dancers of color, particularly with darker skin tones, can ruin the uniformity of a performance. It doesn't matter whether each movement is perfectly in line — their skin stands out. And it’s not just a problem for women. Male dancers of color also feel the sting of this exclusivity, fighting for even fewer opportunities than are offered their female counterparts. Eric Underwood, a soloist at the Royal Ballet in England, addressed this issue in an interview with The Guardian. "You're left with a choice: You have to either become so great a dancer that you're not left in a chorus or a line, or embrace your beauty and hope others do, too — seeing it as beautiful, even if the symmetry is disturbed," he says. The first choice is difficult in the highly competitive world of ballet. It speaks to the old adage: You have to work twice as hard to get half as far. The system is against you, no matter how good you are. The system is against you, even if you're the best. "What should be more unifying is the mastery of the technique, and not the color grade onstage," Figgins fumes. "That should be the aesthetic beauty of it."" - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)

" Only a cherished few books had female protagonists, and they were often good-natured or talented or pretty or embodied some other kind of acceptable femininity that made me feel even worse. (Looking at you, Sara Crewe.) I never thought of myself as boyish, or even as a tomboy; tomboys, in the novels at least, excelled so much at toughness and athleticism that they saw traditionally feminine pursuits as being beneath them. They weren’t beneath me—they were way over my head. I wanted to get better at being a girl, but I thought I didn’t know how. More than that, though, I wanted a different goal. I’d been obsessed since nursery school with the Knights of the Round Table; I loved their loyalty, their purpose, the way they responded to injustice by (sometimes quite literally) slicing heads first and asking questions later. For knights, the delicate damsels weren’t role models; they were responsibilities, because the fragile must be protected. Why couldn’t I be stalwart and gallant, a shield for the weak, a wielder of enchanted swords, a fetcher of ladies out of boiling baths, pure of heart enough to see the Grail? Lancelot was ugly, and it made him the world’s best knight." - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)

"A Vermont man has escaped jury duty — by getting dismissed for wearing a prisoner costume. James Lowe of Barnet says he was released from jury duty on Tuesday when he showed up to court wearing a black-and-white-striped jumpsuit with a matching beanie. The Caledonian Record (http://bit.ly/1QKMx6S ) reports that Lowe showed up on time and joined other prospective jurors before the start of the selection process. Deputies directed him to an empty courtroom to meet with the judge, who told him to leave. Lowe says the judge told him he could've been found in contempt of court. That could've meant a fine or jail time. Lowe says the juror instructions don't restrict clothing, but that he's happy to be released because of his work schedule and family obligations." - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)

His comments led me to conclude that we were out of tissues altogether. That was until I checked the bathroom closet in Rand’s office. I found boxes and boxes of them, as though I’d been stockpiling tissues in anticipation of harsh rationing during some inevitable future Kleenex War. There were just sitting there. IN HIS OFFICE. I grabbed one of the many tissue boxes in the cabinet, intending to bring it downstairs. But I just couldn’t bring myself to do it, because if I did, how on earth would Rand know how upset I was?
