Sleepy Hollow Has Probably Already Screwed Up Its Third Season (http://io9.com/sleepy-hol... http://i.kinja-img.com/ga... )

"Nikki Reed has been cast as legendary American flag seamstress and former Ichabod Crane love interest Betsy Ross for Sleepy Hollow’s third season, and even made her a regular—proving that Sleepy Hollow has almost certainly learned nothing from its troubled second season. Genevieve Valentine, who recaps the series for us (while writing DC’s excellent Catwoman comic, among many other projects), laid out exactly why this is such a bummer in this 100% accurate Twitter rant:" - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)

Why ballerinas of color are in such short supply - NY Daily News (http://www.nydailynews.co... http://assets.nydailynews... )
1 decade ago from Bookmarklet - Comment - Hide - - - (Edit | Remove) - More...
"Historically, major ballet companies have shunned women of color because of rigid standards for beauty and uniformity in ballet, as well as racial stereotypes about black and brown women’s bodies. “All the girls in my school are very Russian-style — flat chested and thin," said Abrantes, 16, who is a student at Thomas Armour Youth Ballet in her hometown of Miami. "Some of them told me, 'Oh you're never going to make it. You don't have the body type.'"" - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)

" The challenges for minority ballerinas are not just cultural. Most aspiring ballerinas attend up to six classes per week. Even with programs that cost as little as $15 per session, that can add up to thousands of dollars a year, not including the price of pointe shoes and leotards. Ballet schools are also rarely found near predominantly black and brown communities, forcing kids and parents to travel long distances to attend mostly white classes where they're not always made to feel welcome. This is why Misty Copeland is so important, says Rachel Moore, CEO of the American Ballet Theatre where Copeland now serves as principal dancer. "If we're in America, our ballet companies should look like America and they don't right now,” she said. “It's imperative to diversify the company."" - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)

Mont. bartender shot after irate customer served Clamato - NY Daily News (http://www.nydailynews.co... http://assets.nydailynews... )

"A Montana bartender was shot in the ribs and his dog gunned down after a customer got angry about being served Clamato instead of tomato juice in his red beer, police said. Monte Hanson allegedly opened fire on Joseph Lewis, 29, as he returned from work to his Hamilton apartment early Saturday, NBC Montana reported. The 59-year-old went to the downtown bar where Lewis, who is also his neighbor, was bartending at 10 p.m. Friday. Hanson asked for a red beer – but freaked out when it was served with the clam broth drink, saying that the concoction went against his Jewish religion." - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)

Man sells car after unsuccessful search for snake in vehicle - Taipei Times (http://www.taipeitimes.co... )
1 decade ago from Bookmarklet - Comment - Hide - - - (Edit | Remove) - More...
"As the family was preparing to get back in the car and return to Taipei, Chen said he saw a black “snake tail” sticking out of the glove compartment after his wife retrieved some tissue paper, adding that, out of concern that he might scare his wife and daughter, Chen pretended not to have seen the snake, allowing it to escape into the recesses of the vehicle. He then sought help at a nearby fire department, where a team of firefighters sprayed the vehicle with chemicals, took apart the dashboard and glove compartment and searched the engine compartment. After nearly two hours of searching, the reptile was nowhere to be found. Still concerned about the snake, Chen said he then drove to an auto repair shop and asked a mechanic to take his car to a service center to be properly dismantled and examined. Chen then changed his mind and decided to avoid the hassle, asking the shop to sell his car instead." - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)

N.J. homeowners sue after discovering house was once a sex club (http://www.philly.com/phi... )

"Brian and Lauren Gehm moved into their new home in Sussex County last summer. Soon after, a contractor installing satellite TV in their Sparta home found several issues with the electrical wiring. The faulty wiring led to a surprising discovery: Several webcams were hidden in the basement and connected to a closed circuit television system, according to the complaint, first reported by Courthouse News. The couple located additional cameras throughout the house, according to the report. The Gehms, worried the hidden cameras had recorded their every move, resorted to basic detective work. It didn’t take them long to learn their abode was once used as “a disco and/or ‘sex club’,” according to the Courthouse News account." - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)

A friend bought a house that came with a [full-sized] very very big satellite dish in the back yard and several phone lines in the basement. Apparently, the house had belonged to a bookie. Review: ‘The Red Detachment of Women,’ by the National Ballet of China, Soldiers On - The New York Times (http://www.nytimes.com/20... http://static01.nyt.com/i... )

"Choreographed by Li Chengxiang, Jiang Zuhui and Wang Xixian, “The Red Detachment of Women” is both spectacular (as a relic of Communist kitsch) and scary (for pretty much the same reason). The plot involves Qionghua (Zhang Jian), a peasant girl who is first seen chained to a post and is about to be sold to the wicked Nan Batian (Li Ke). But she escapes only to be captured, beaten and left for dead in a thunderstorm. After revolutionaries, including the brave, conscientious Hong Changqing (Zhou Zhaohui), rescue her, she joins a female unit in the Red Army, where they make a soldier of her — raise a fist to that! — but her trigger-happy ways lead to trouble. An early attempt to take down Nan Batian fails, and he escapes. Qionghua learns discipline and later redeems herself by firing a bullet into his back — after leaping into the air and landing cross-legged on the floor." - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)

"We started with my article, and Tanya Wideman Davis brought in the reality of the trope of the ballerina, the aesthetic, and the mythology of her (pure, chaste, ideal beauty) and the idea that Black women, and our bodies historically (and presently) have never been allowed to be perceived that way – the black female body has always been portrayed as “deviant” and “sexualized”. I brought up how stressful it is to be Black in America, living knowing that you are enemy # 1 and constantly having to *prove that you are not the “stereotype” of your race. I added the fact that as a little brown girl (or boy) stepping into the extremely white world of ballet, you not only bear the responsibility of becoming proficient in the technique, but you must do so while carrying the weight of your race on your back. Little white girls don’t have to struggle under that burden. I added, we [Black people] know that we are not supposed to be there because we do not see ourselves there — not as teachers, administrators, not even as receptionists." - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)

Why I No Longer Eat Watermelon, or How a Racist Email Caused Me to Leave Graduate School | int / med (http://interrogatingmedia... )

"One thing worth noting. The email was sent to only the white (or white-appearing) students in the class, and some white people outside of the class. This is despite the class itself boasting, what might be conservatively called, “all the god damn black people in the program.” I got the email, presumably, because I’m light-skinned and racially ambiguous, depending on the person doing the interpreting. Some other things of note. The language of the email traffics in the same kind of racial ignorance as the blackface parties that are so ubiquitous on college campuses. We might call this a blackface party without the shoe polish. One of the defining elements of those parties is the focus on things that might denote blackness, and we have some of them here! Look: hooch, watermillyums, straw hats, and other Darkeyisms. Another feature of these parties: unabashed racism! The student tells us that she might yell racist things at the TV (later, when questioned, she will say she didn’t know what she meant by this. Reminder, she’s an English PhD student in a prestigious program. If you don’t know what you’re writing, what are you doing here?)" - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)

"A young bull shark captured last month off the coast of Jhukeng Village (竹坑) in Pingtung County might be an indication of a school inhabiting near-shore waters off the nation’s most crowded beaches in Kenting (墾丁). The shark was trapped by a fixed shore net and was slightly injured only 20km from a popular beach in Kenting. The shark is now living in a tank at the National Museum of Marine Biology and Aquarium. The shark was the latest of five bull shark sightings in Pingtung over the past four years, with the sighting of a 2.5m bull shark in July last year and four bull sharks reported off Checheng Township (車城) in 2011, the Kenting National Park Administration said." - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)

China Fences In Its Nomads, and an Ancient Life Withers - The New York Times (http://www.nytimes.com/20... http://static01.nyt.com/i... )

"Gere, who like many Tibetans uses a single name, is filled with regret. Like hundreds of thousands of pastoralists across China who have been relocated into bleak townships over the past decade, he is jobless, deeply indebted and dependent on shrinking government subsidies to buy the milk, meat and wool he once obtained from his flocks. “We don’t go hungry, but we have lost the life that our ancestors practiced for thousands of years,” he said." - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)
"For the Han Chinese majority, the people of the grasslands are a source of fascination and fear. China’s most significant periods of foreign subjugation came at the hands of nomadic invaders, including Kublai Khan, whose Mongolian horseback warriors ruled China for almost a century beginning in 1271. “These areas have always been hard to know and hard to govern by outsiders, seen as places of banditry or guerrilla warfare and home to peoples who long resisted integration,” said Charlene E. Makley, an anthropologist at Reed College, in Oregon, who studies Tibetan communities in China. “But now the government feels it has the will and the resources to bring these people into the fold.”" - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)

When America's Librarians Went To War : NPR History Dept. : NPR (http://www.npr.org/sectio... http://media.npr.org/asse... )
1 decade ago from Bookmarklet - Comment - Hide - - - (Edit | Remove) - More...
""In both wars, librarians back at home or on the front were key in collecting and distributing books to soldiers," Bertram says. "During World War I, librarians maintained camp and hospital libraries," and in both world wars, "librarians promoted books drives and encouraged donations." Librarians were especially active during World War I. The ALA reports that between 1917 and 1920, its Library War Service established three dozen camp libraries with the support of the Carnegie Corporation and raised $5 million in public contributions. Special uniforms were created for librarians in World War I. The American Library in Paris — established in 1920 by the ALA and American expatriates, and seeded with books from the LWS — continues to this day." - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)
"Librarians volunteered to sort the books before they were shipped, Bertram says, "often weeding out books that were in poor condition or books that were not suitable for fighting young men, such as children's books and gardening books." The books that did make it into the hands of the troops, she says, boosted morale, provided connections to people back home and offered technical guidance. She adds that the books from home were therapeutic for those convalescing in hospitals, "helping them to get over physical and emotional pain." And certain books helped to alleviate homesickness, chase away boredom and provide training to those who wanted to land jobs when they returned home." - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)

Review: ‘Tap World’ Documentary Features a Variety of Quick-Stepping Dancers - The New York Times (http://www.nytimes.com/20... http://static01.nyt.com/i... )
1 decade ago from Bookmarklet - Comment - Hide - - - (Edit | Remove) - More...
"“Tap World” is a pleasant documentary full of tap dancers proclaiming their love of the form and showing off their skills. It would be better if it had a bit less proclaiming and a bit more nuts-and-bolts information, but still, it’s refreshing to see people bubbling over with enthusiasm for an art that is somewhat out of the mainstream. The film’s genesis, we’re told, included an open invitation to professional and amateur tap dancers to submit clips of themselves in action. The movie focuses on an assortment of dancers from all over the world, some tapping for their own enjoyment, others trying to make a living at it." - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)
"There’s a naïveté to some of this, especially when people who teach the discipline imply that tap dancing could solve all the problems of the world’s wayward youths, a claim also made by proponents of soccer, spelling bees, bridge, poetry slams and a zillion other things. There’s a repetitiveness as well; everyone here loves tap and eagerly tells us so. Yet we’re left wondering about the details, like the physical demands and the time commitment necessary. And the film alludes only briefly to the economics of making a living with fast-moving feet. The many varieties of tap dancing on display, though, are a treat to watch. And one particular story, of a dancer who overcame a seemingly insurmountable obstacle to continue pursuing the art form, is downright humbling." - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)

Lily was eventually found in the geraniums, but Boris remained missing and the family grew worried. Circus Cats Are Lions of Their Profession, but Domestic at Heart - The New York Times (http://www.nytimes.com/20... http://static01.nyt.com/i... )

"Ms. Martin’s cats, who will play one-hour shows from July 16 through 19 at the Muse Brooklyn, are trained to do highly non-catlike things: Tuna, the lead performer, rings a cowbell; Alley, who holds the Guinness World Record for longest cat jump (six feet), plies her specialty; Sookie pushes a shopping cart across the stage, unless she is distracted by shiny objects or finds the stage too warm, in which case she lies down." - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)
"“My cats are excellent on set,” Ms. Martin boasted. “They just move in — they are accustomed to the stage.” Part of her message is familiar in cat adoption circles: Friendlier shelter cats are more appealing to potential owners. Since 2009, Ms. Martin said, she and her two assistants have trained 159 foster cats, often teaching them to give humans a high-five or to jump through a hoop, to make them more adoptable. “So many cats end up in shelters because they have behavioral problems, and most behavioral problems are due to boredom,” Ms. Martin said. “If you train your cat to do tricks, you make them use their brains. I hope to encourage people to expect more of their cats.”" - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)

"Q: What are some of the challenges you might be facing running Monet School of Ballet and how can the public help? A: What I’ve noticed since opening my ballet school is that some parents are not able to pay for ballet lessons. Fortunately, I have been able to provide free ballet lessons to single moms, and I currently have three scholarship students. I feel that all children should have equal opportunities to participate in arts programs, no matter what their parent’s financial circumstances are. My mission is to give back to my community, with hopes to receive donations to our scholarship fund to help those in need.
