Florida man shoots teen daughter’s boyfriend after boy dares him (http://www.rawstory.com/2... http://www.rawstory.com/w... )

"“The father and victim do not have a good relationship,” Lt. Paul Hopkins, of the Orange County Sheriff’s Office, told WFTV. Determined to see his girlfriend nonetheless, the boy drove up to her home at about 4 p.m. on Sunday and was confronted by two shotgun wielding men; her stepfather, Alvin Knight, and his friend. Instead of leaving, the 16-year-old placed the barrel on his face and dared Knight, saying he was unafraid. The blast only grazed the youngster’s face, the Sentinel reports. The boy is expected to recover. Authorities told WFTV that the gun discharge was accidental." - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)

Ko gifts bitter gourd baskets to ex-KMT members - Taipei Times (http://www.taipeitimes.co... http://www.taipeitimes.co... )

"In a gesture of support, Taipei Mayor Ko Wen-je (柯文哲) on Monday sent former Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) Taipei City Councilor Yang Shih-chiu (楊實秋) and Taipei City Councilor Lee Ching-yuan (李慶元) each a basket of flowers and bitter gourds after they — along with three other outspoken critics of the party — were expelled by the KMT on Thursday last week." - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)

"The bitter gourd symbolizes a well-meaning character who gives “harsh, but earnest advice,” Lee said, which was how he acted with President Ma Ying-jeou (馬英九), KMT Vice Chairman Hau Lung-bin (郝龍斌) and other KMT authorities to no avail. Taipei City Government spokesperson Sidney Lin (林鶴明) said Ko’s gifts were simply a way of showing his support for the three. “There are fewer people willing to give help when others are down,” Lin quoted Ko as saying. A city staffer said it was Ko who thought of sending the gifts, and the staff only arranged them." - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)

The Anti-Gentrification Ghosts of Prospect Park - The New Yorker (http://www.newyorker.com/... http://www.newyorker.com/... )

"In January, a woman was standing in her kitchen when the overhead lights switched off. A doorman was watching security-camera footage one night when the motion-sensor lights in a stairwell flipped on one by one—first on the seventh floor, then the sixth, and on down to the ground floor—with no living thing in sight. A cabdriver dropped one resident off with a warning: “Be careful. It’s full of skeletons.” Turnover seemed high among the building’s doormen, one of whom, according to the Post, said that 123 On the Park was “a messed-up place to work because it’s haunted.” One rainy night last month, an amateur ghost hunter stopped by to investigate. The only open window on the first floor framed a dimly lit crucifix. “Somebody definitely died here,” Janine Melnitz, a resident, said, walking through the subcellar. Janine Melnitz is not her real name; her roommate had demanded that she conceal it. “She doesn’t want them to come after us,” Melnitz said. She meant the ghosts." - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)

A Ticket to This Music Festival in Transylvania Will Cost You Two Pints of Blood | Adweek (http://www.adweek.com/adf... http://www.adweek.com/fil... )
1 decade ago from Bookmarklet - Comment - Hide - - - (Edit | Remove) - More...
"To sell tickets to its first-time event, the Transylvania-based Untold Music Festival is working the Dracula angle. In partnership with Romania's National Blood Transfusion Institute, it has launched "Pay with Blood," a campaign that lets you buy a day pass with plasma. "We were talking about how to incorporate Dracula into our festival, and after seeing the numbers and how behind Romania was in blood donations, we had this idea," Untold PR manager Stefana Giurgiu told the Guardian. About 1.7 percent of the Romanian population are active blood donors, lower than anywhere else in the EU. (Vampire mythology probably doesn't help.) And to justify its existence, the Untold Festival needs hundreds of thousands of attendees to fill both its paid and free venues. Assuming you've got time to spare and blood to give, Untold takes place from July 30 to Aug. 2 in Cluj-Napoca, Romania. Through this Friday, people who give blood at centers in Bucharest and Cluj will get one-day tickets; those who register to give blood online will get 30 percent off." - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)

"Afterwards, he approached me. I had never met him before and when he was lavish and generous with his praise of my material, a light breeze could have knocked me over. Although to be fair that may also be because I was high as fuck. Still, winning the regard of one of my childhood heroes felt like I had just earned my first comedy merit badge. However, the afterglow was fleeting. Shortly thereafter, I saw Robin do one of my jokes on late night TV. I couldn’t believe it. I mentioned it to a few of my more veteran comedian friends and they all laughed and shook their heads knowingly. Yup, that’s Robin." - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)

"Today, my copy of Reality… What a Concept is one of my most cherished autographed LPs. When Robin signed it, he wrote, “Remember me.” At the time, I thought the intention of the sentiment was a kind of whimsical joke about who he had been back in those Mork days. Kind of like, “Hey, remember this guy?” But looking at it hanging on my wall now, the inscription without any question mark reads so differently. Yes, Robin. I will always remember you." - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)

Where did city squirrels come from? : TreeHugger (http://www.treehugger.com... http://media.treehugger.c... )

"It was in the late 19th century that landscape parks really took root and cities began implementing wide expanses of green space. With an understanding that nature and fresh air were efficacious curatives for the maladies that ailed, “pleasure grounds” and urban parks became a place to enjoy the health-giving effects of nature. And as parks became more prominent, squirrels became the focus of attention, as Etienne Benson of the University of Pennsylvania writes in the Journal of American History. Urban reformers, who thought of the squirrel as a rural mascot, wanted to bring the animal in to places like Manhattan’s Central Park in order to create “a bucolic atmosphere that was entertaining, enlightening, and salubrious.” In 1847 three squirrels were released in Philadelphia's Franklin Square and were provided with food and boxes for nesting. By the 1870s, the squirrel trend was in full swing." - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)

"State police say a drunken driving suspect ran away from the scene of a central Pennsylvania crash but was found on a nearby barn roof — naked — and arrested once he fell off. Online court records don’t list an attorney for 20-year-old Daquan Tate, of Hollidaysburg. State police say he faces drunken driving charges for crashing into a speed limit sign and a roadside mailbox after losing control of his car early Saturday. Police say Tate kept driving until he again lost control of his car, hit an embankment and stopped along the shoulder of the road before running away. Police say Tate wasn’t hurt when he fell off the barn roof." - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)

Ramadan feast celebrated in Taipei Railway Station - Taipei Times (http://www.taipeitimes.co... http://www.taipeitimes.co... )

"The Taiwan Railways Administration (TRA) estimated that between 10,000 and 20,000 Indonesian workers flocked to the nation’s largest train station yesterday morning for the first Sunday after the Edi al-Fitr began on Friday last week. Many workers sat in circles in the station’s lobby and shared their food. The Taipei City Government had also prepared a celebratory event for the workers to enjoy the festival. The city government arranged for an Indonesian-speaking staff member to broadcast important announcements as part of the celebrations. Taipei Railway Station Master Chien Hsin-li (簡信立) said that the station set up red ropes separating train passengers queuing at the ticket windows at the lobby and the Indonesian workers arriving for the event, adding that signs were pasted on the floor to facilitate crowd movement. Chien said that the station had staff and volunteers to assist those celebrating the holiday so they could enjoy the space reserved for them, and train passengers could access ticketing queues. “Though people have different opinions about the gathering of foreign laborers in Taipei Railway Station, we respect and coexist with each other peacefully. We live in a multicultural society. We also have to ensure that the train passengers would not be affected,” he said." - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)

Well, with her husband working on it, I'd assume she'd be at least tangentially involved. Honestly, I could see this being cool, as long as Raimi and Tapert are the ones still helming the ship, because they know what made it fun and amazing the first time around, but now might have a better budget, or at the least, the effects themselves are cheaper. - Jennifer D. - - (Edit | Remove)

"A 72-year-old former Marine who was shot while guarding a sea turtle nest in Florida with his own gun is recovering from the wound and does not regret bringing a loaded weapon to protect himself and the special habitat. "I figured if I showed a handgun that would be enough to diffuse any situation," Stanley Pannaman, 72, told the Daily News. "People may be nuts but they aren't crazy. I didn't realize I would be dealing with a crazy guy." The Vietnam veteran recounted a bizarre encounter on the beach Friday night with Michael Q. McAuliffe, 38, who Pannaman said had an odor of alcohol so pungent he could smell it 20 feet away. He also didn't realize the .32 caliber pistol Pannaman was holding was in fact a real gun and was shocked after he shot Pannaman with it." - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)

"To be fair, this is a weirder problem for Bones than it is Sleepy Hollow. The FBI definitely exists in the world of Abbie Mills and Ichabod Crane; in fact, I’ve heard tell that Abbie starts the third season as an FBI agent herself. Crossing paths with Agent Booth and Dr. Brennan of Bones is no problem. But is Bones really ready to be visited by a 240-year-old dude who fights Headless Horsemen? How will the characters possibly go back to investigating regular old cold cases after they’ve discovered that actual demons are coming to earth and trying to bring about the end of days? If I’m being perfectly honest, though, if David Boreanaz is shown fighting any kind of supernatural creature with a melee weapon like in his Angel days, I’m going to be on board." - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)

Mayor of Ador, Spain, announces citywide nap time - UPI.com (http://www.upi.com/Odd_Ne... http://cdnph.upi.com/sv/b... )
1 decade ago from Bookmarklet - Comment - Hide - - - (Edit | Remove) - More...
"A Spanish mayor has become the first in the country to issue a proclamation creating an official afternoon nap time for the entire city. Mayor Joan Faus Vitoria of Ador in Valencia declared 2 to 5 p.m. as the official time for the city's residents to take their afternoon siestas. The edict asks residents to keep quiet during the siesta hours and the mayor recommended children be kept inside to prevent noise from traveling into open windows. The mayor said the nap time was chosen due to the high afternoon heat making 2 to 5 p.m. the ideal time to take a break from working in fields. Vitoria said there will be no penalties for violations, and the edict should be treated as "merely a suggestion" rather than an "obligation." " - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)

Black Dancers, White Ballets - The New York Times (http://www.nytimes.com/20... http://static01.nyt.com/i... )
1 decade ago from Bookmarklet - Comment - Hide - - - (Edit | Remove) - More...
"Ballet Russe reportedly told Ms. Wilkinson and her family that they were not to let the public know that this light-skinned young woman was actually black. Onstage, she was often required to “white up,” masking herself in pale pancake makeup. This practice continued when I began my ballet training decades later in Washington, D.C., though it was generally limited to the so-called white ballets — “Swan Lake,” “Giselle,” “La Sylphide” and “La Bayadere.” (White ballets are so named not because of racism, but because they are peopled with ghosts and swans and spirits, their ashen costumes illuminated in a pale white glow.) Although the white ballets were not designed to exclude African-Americans, that is what happened. In Washington, in “The Nutcracker,” African-American dancers were inevitably cast in the Arabian/Coffee divertissement, regardless of their aesthetic qualities or mastery of technique. And it was regarded as ludicrous for an African-American child like me to dance in the opening party scene." - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)
"The insular world of classical ballet has limited not just the number of black ballerinas; there are only a handful of black classical choreographers. And for companies other than D.T.H., black spectators are rare. The days of whiting-up are behind us, but ballet still needs to change. Lest the door slams shut behind Ms. Copeland, we must acknowledge the achievements of the artists who paved the way for her, and we must train and nurture black ballet dancers and choreographers, and cultivate audience diversity. If we fail to do so, it is not just aspiring black dancers who will suffer, but ballet in general that will do so — by missing out on the talents of the next Misty Copeland and by failing to appeal to 21st-century audiences." - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)

Kyle Froman's Ballet Photography | Vanity Fair (http://www.vanityfair.com... http://photos.vanityfair.... http://photos.vanityfair.... )
1 decade ago from Bookmarklet - Comment - Hide - - - (Edit | Remove) - More...
"With how it’s portrayed in pop culture, why would anyone want to be a ballet dancer? Black Swan likened it to a dark, chaotic underworld; Center Stage to a cesspool of egoists and mean girls; and even the “reality” show Breaking Pointe made it seem like a bizarre version of The Dating Game in pointe shoes. But, when looking at the photographs of dance photographer Kyle Froman, all these misconceptions seem to melt away, replaced instead with a yearning honesty. Froman’s works both show the tutus, the glitter, and the grandiose glamour, but also the life behind the velvet curtain: a ballerina, moments before showtime, fussing with her hair; a dancer wincing in pain; dancers beautifully juxtaposed with their Lincoln Center surroundings. How exactly was he able to capture this essence of an industry—a task that so many others have tried but failed? Perhaps because he’s one of them." - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)
"“I knew where to point my lens to catch the human side of a dancer’s life, but I also understood choreography and the energy of a performance,” he said. A year after photographing the N.Y.C.B., he published his first major work as a photographer, In the Wings: Behind the Scenes of the New York City Ballet." - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)
