See it: Aimee Mann, John Doe star in music-themed indie - http://www.usatoday.com/story...

"Not only does the indie flick Pleased to Meet Me star Aimee Mann and John Doe, it references bands like Sleater-Kinney and Pussy Riot and shows Loudon Wainwright III playing a theremin." - friarw - - (Edit | Remove)
Co-written and directed by one of my former college roommates: Archie Borders. I saw this at a pre-opening screening at the World Cafe in Philly this past fall. Great film. - friarw - - (Edit | Remove)

Nonconformity and Freethinking Now Considered Mental Illnesses | The Mind Unleashed - http://themindunleashed.org/2013...
1 decade ago from Friendfeed - Comment - Hide - - - (Edit | Remove) - More...
"Is nonconformity and freethinking a mental illness? According to the newest addition of the DSM-IV (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders), it certainly is. The manual identifies a new mental illness called “oppositional defiant disorder” or ODD. Defined as an “ongoing pattern of disobedient, hostile and defiant behavior,” symptoms include questioning authority, negativity, defiance, argumentativeness, and being easily annoyed." - friarw - - (Edit | Remove)

Well at least the new "church" coffeehouse that isn't run by my church (see previous post) has some great coffee. Plus it's only 1-2 minutes from my house and has off-street parking.

This is the opening story of my sermon on Sunday. Editorial suggestions are very much welcomed. I want to make sure it makes sense as I tell it. Let me know what you think.
1 decade ago from Friendfeed - Comment - Hide - - - (Edit | Remove) - More...
When it comes to my sermons, I almost always write them out in a manuscript. Once in a blue moon I might just use some notes, and very rarely I ad-lib my sermon after pondering the scriptures all week. The reason I write my sermons out word for word is twofold. First, I have a high appreciation of words, and I want the words in my sermons to be just right. Second, I have gotten into trouble or have miss spoken on a few of the occasions I have tried to “wing it.” The best example of this happened in my second full year or ministry at FUMC in Tamaqua. - friarw - - (Edit | Remove)

I just heard the following quote from the movie "42" today. Branch Rickey: [Referring to Jackie Robinson] He's a Methodist, I'm a Methodist... And God's a Methodist; We can't go wrong."

And then there's this one from "Blazing Saddles." Hedley Lamarr: "I want rustlers, cut throats, murderers, bounty hunters, desperados, mugs, pugs, thugs, nitwits, halfwits, dimwits, vipers, snipers, con men, Indian agents, Mexican bandits, muggers, buggerers, bushwhackers, hornswogglers, horse thieves, bull dykes, train robbers, bank robbers, ass-kickers, shit-kickers and Methodists." - friarw - - (Edit | Remove)
From "A River Runs Through it" comes . . . Older Norman: [narrating] "They were Methodists, a denomination my father referred to as Baptists who could read." - friarw - - (Edit | Remove)

I love the Carly Simon Song "Let the River Run," with the exception of one phrase, which drives me crazy. The phrase? "We the great and small . . . Stand on a star . . . And blaze a trail of desire . . . Through the dark'ning dawn." Dark'ning dawn??? Seriously???

Engaging in a debate, although it is civil, on scriptural authority and interpretation concerning passages in the Bible dealing with same-sex behavior, is ultimately a waste of time. Folks are pretty well entrenched in their views, or at least those I have encountered are, and unlikely to change.
