"Following yesterday’s extraordinarily transphobic segment, Kimberly Ray and Barry Beck, hosts of The Breakfast Buzz on Rochester, N.Y., radio station 98.9 The Buzz, were fired by the station's parent company, Entercom Rochester."

Why don't more people understand this simple truth? "While the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution protects against the government taking legal action against anyone on the basis of their speech, it is not a license to say offensive things without consequences from individuals and employers."

After six days of conferences and a full slate of stuff on Sunday, I now have another meeting at church tonight. This one concerns the homeless in my community.
Meeting was long but productive. I may have secured another tenant to rent part of our church building. This would be the fourth tenant I have procured to help keep the church going. I don't think many people realize this and even fewer appreciate it. Oh well, we don't do what we do for recognition . . . right?

Well, guess who finally arrived at the conference two and a half days into it. If you guessed Jim J. you guessed correctly.

Working on my speech that I will give when one of the six resolutions on sexuality comes up tomorrow or Saturday at Annual Conference. Suggestions/improvements appreciated.
In Acts, chapter 10, God sends the apostle Peter a vision. Peter has gone to a rooftop to pray and discovers while there that he is hungry, famished even. And then comes the vision - not once or twice but three times. Three times Peter is told to “kill and eat” some of the animals that God shows him in the vision - animals our Jewish brothers and sisters believed were unclean because of the law given to Moses. Peter refuses, telling God, “I have never eaten anything that is unclean.” Peter, it seems, had a hard time getting the point God was trying to make until God finally tells him flat out, “What God has made clean, do not call unclean.”

4th day of conferencing done this week. This conference is not near as fun as the unconference. I may have to smack a few people upside the head before Saturday afternoon gets here.

My two favorite quotes from the unconference: 1) Fuck you and love your neighbor. 2) The anointing is in the penis; that's why I always wear a strap-on when I preach.

Things you missed out on by not being at the unconference: some excellent single malt whiskey, a discussion on the transmission of herpes through the practice of sharing a common cup during communion, and me singing Don't Stop Believin' by Journey during karaoke.

Second day of the unconference. Having lots of fun so far and meeting some great people. I.e. Very progressive Christians. :^)

Off to a church "unconference" later this morning. This will last through Wednesday. Then I have the Annual Conference of the Eastern Pennsylvania United Methodist Church from Thursday through Saturday. Looking forward to the first one, not so much the second.

As I was sprinting down the main aisle of Target earlier tonight to get something I forgot, I must have pulled a muscle in my right calf. It doesn't hurt to bad, but darn it, I hate getting old.

Okay. Time to work on the sermon. The text for my message can be found here: http://bible.oremus.org/... Let me know if you have any ideas. I am at a loss.
I've always liked that he paid as much attention to the loss of the mighty (a loved member of the household of a rich and powerful man) as he does for the only son of a widow (someone who would be without both family and status with his death.) Each person was losing/had lost someone that was crucial to them, and he spared them the loss. [Also interesting that half of the translations say "servant" while the others say "slave."]

When people insist that only ordained pastors can say the magic words at communion (better known as the words of institution - On the night Jesus was betrayed, he took bread, broke it . . . etc . . . ), this is what I see in my mind.

My internal response this morning at Bible Study when someone brought up the idea that muslims want to take over the USA and rob us of all our rights.

From what I understand, she was the same way before the Supreme Court decision. And if you ever need an example of why that decision was made, and why it is important for ensuring religious freedom, just point at teachers like her.

"Not only does the indie flick Pleased to Meet Me star Aimee Mann and John Doe, it references bands like Sleater-Kinney and Pussy Riot and shows Loudon Wainwright III playing a theremin."

Co-written and directed by one of my former college roommates: Archie Borders. I saw this at a pre-opening screening at the World Cafe in Philly this past fall. Great film.
