In 1963, the Fiat 500 D "Snow Kitten" pictured here was sent to Scott Base, the New Zealand Antarctic research facility, and used for field trials. To withstand the harsh weather conditions the car featured various enhancements to increase its performance: twin batteries, heat exchanger, snow chains, and heavy duty coil. It was also painted orange in order to be more visible in case of emergency.
