The professional backgrounds of the candidates are telling: Spencer is a plumber and gas engineer; Reform’s Matthew Goodwin, a former academic turned far-right influencer; and Labour’s Angeliki Stogia, a corporate lobbyist for public-private partnerships. Unusually for British politics, the winner was the candidate with the normal job.
