Why do some people prefer using old dictionaries? For some people, it's an ideological thing or a "language purity" thing (not that such a thing actually exists outside their minds). For me, my Webster's Fourth is well marked up - I can usually find what I need faster than in any other dictionary. I also have notes written in where other dictionaries have differing etymologies. I prefer the American Heritage Dictionary when I want conjectural etymology. Its list of Indo-European roots is especially nice when I'm investigating etymological relations between words. Different dictionaries for different needs, but my choice in dictionaries has nothing to do with eschewing the modern, more "liberal" dictionaries. - friendfeed from FriendFeed - - (Edit | Remove)
It's the OED or Collins over here. Never heard of people preferring older editions of them. - friendfeed from FriendFeed - - (Edit | Remove)

If you learn a foreign language when you are young but the exposure to that language is brief and you don't get to hear or practice it subsequently, does the neglected language fade away from our memory? - Yes, forgetting is forgetting, has been the belief ... you 'use it or lose it' ... but language learning may instead be more like 'riding a bike' and even a "forgotten" language may be more deeply engraved in our minds than we realize. - friendfeed from FriendFeed - - (Edit | Remove)
