"He thinks that although the language may not have taken the world "by storm" yet, it is "slowly but surely moving in that direction, with the internet giving it a significant boost in recent years"." - - Esperanto is a cool idea, but there is a good reason it will never be the lingua france that its proponents want it to be: no one speaks it from birth and there is not a sizable population of Esperanto speakers anywhere. I don't care how logical the language is - that's not exactly a recipe for a successful language. - friendfeed from FriendFeed - - (Edit | Remove)

Being produced by a Christian missionary institution, Ethnologue has issues of scientific neutrality; see "A language is a dialect with a missionary" (<a rel="nofollow" href="http://tr.im/ethnologue&q... ;), a review by Danish journalist Ole Stig Andersen. Concerning lowland South America (the area I'm most familiar with), Ethnologue is rather inaccurate. - friendfeed from FriendFeed - - (Edit | Remove)

Oye, new Spanish grammar guidelines unveiled - Yahoo! News - http://news.yahoo.com/s...

"Can a Barcelona truck driver be expected to speak like a Buenos Aires banker? Can rules be imposed on a language spoken by 400 million people stretching from Madrid to Manila? The academic overseers of the language of Cervantes have taken an ambitious stab at it, unveiling their first Spanish grammar guidelines in nearly 80 years. The fruit of their toil is a nearly 4,000-page tome in two volumes presented Thursday, with yet another to come out next year. It was produced by the Spanish Royal Academy and 21 sister organizations in Latin America and other countries where Spanish is spoken, such as the United States and the Philippines, and has taken them 11 years to compile." - friendfeed from FriendFeed - - (Edit | Remove)
