'Rent-a-Foreigner in China' - NYTimes.com (http://www.nytimes.com/20... http://graphics8.nytimes.... )

"In provincial West China, I filmed specialty firms that collect groups of foreigners whom they rent out to attend events. Clients can select from a menu of skin colors and nationalities; whites are the most desirable and expensive. The most frequent customers are real estate companies. They believe that filling their remote buildings with foreign faces, even for a day, suggests that the area is 'international,' a buzzword in provincial areas that often translates to 'buy.'" - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)

They do this in Japan and Korea, too. I know a white-passing black guy who goes between both countries attending events, business and show tapings just so they can look more international. - faboomama - - (Edit | Remove)

This Folk Song About Severed Fingers Is Actually a Gun Violence PSA for Millennials | Adweek (http://www.adweek.com/adf... http://www.adweek.com/fil... )
1 decade ago from Bookmarklet - Comment - Hide - - - (Edit | Remove) - More...
"Grey New York makes a ton of gun violence PSAs--from the famously brutal (and award-winning) "Ed" spot in 2013 to this year's stunt in which it opened a gun store in the middle of New York City. But this new project might be its craziest yet. Millennials apparently love the combination of music and severed fingers, because that's the target market and the theme of this new video from Women Against Gun Violence. It was directed and animated by Johnnie Semerad of Quiet Man, and is set to a folk song (that might remind you a bit of "Dumb Ways to Die") scored and performed by singer/songwriter Stephen Krauss." - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)

Mom, daughter walk for animal welfare - Taipei Times (http://www.taipeitimes.co... )

"Yu Chun-hui (余春慧), a 43-year-old animal lover from Nantou County's Puli Township (埔里), said her family has four cats, but also takes everyday care of several strays. Her daughter, Hsu Chien-yi (許倩宜), 23, shares the same charitable spirit and is a volunteer at an animal welfare organization. Yu said that the law permitting the euthanasia of animals that have remained in an animal shelter for more than 12 days is an inhumane practice and should be replaced by TNVR (trap-neuter-vaccinate-return) which she described as a more humane and effective method of feral animal control promoted by many animal welfare organizations. She said she feared that the outbreak of rabies in the south in 2013 might lead to the gratuitous capture and killing of more street dogs, a situation that she hopes could be changed by amending the Animal Protection Act (動物保護法) to replace euthanasia with TNVR." - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)

Review: "Rhythm in Motion," a Tap Dance Showcase, at Theater at the 14th Street Y - NYTimes.com (http://www.nytimes.com/20... http://static01.nyt.com/i... )

"Like any sampler of new work, the American Tap Dance Foundation's "Rhythm in Motion" showcase needs only to introduce a promising voice or an intriguing experiment to count as worthwhile. Many of the entries in this year's second program, which had its debut at the Theater at the 14th Street Y on Saturday, passed the I'd-like-to-see-more-of-that test. One of those segments even fulfilled the wish and kept returning. This was Caleb Teicher's "Variations," which came in three parts distributed across the showcase program. To tracks from a Glenn Gould recording of Bach's "Goldberg Variations," Mr. Teicher, already an acclaimed dancer, revealed a choreographic talent." - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)

Couple accused of cult-like fraud - Taipei Times (http://www.taipeitimes.co... )

"According to police information, the two suspects, a 35-year-old man named Su Chien-hua and his 32-year-old wife, Hsu Ya-chu, claimed to be able to see into the future and break the bonds of fate by their own 'spell,' which required drawing on female believers' naked bodies to break curses. The police said that victims of the two were all women aged between 20 and 30, adding that basic 'disciples' had to pay NT$5,000 per month. 'Disciples' favored by self-proclaimed 'Dragon King' Su were allowed to take the title 'daughters of the Dragon King,' but were required to make a monthly deposit of NT$20,000, the police said, adding that most of these 'daughters' were told the effects of the 'spell' would be more effective if they slept with Su. Police quoted Su as saying that, upon returning to Taiwan from a trip to Thailand last year, he dreamed of a white dragon that gave him the spell in exchange for his handsome looks, which is why he is now obese." - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)

"Road crews spent hours cutting a delivery truck out of a tree Wednesday afternoon. The truck came down next to the northbound lanes of Interstate 95 near the Old St. Augustine Road exit near Baptist Medical Center South. Crews had to use chainsaws to get the truck out of the tree. It took crews hours to get the branches out of the way. Road crews and tow trucks spent hours working to get it down. We had to move to the other side of the highway because there was a danger the tree would fall. A person who works for the company that owns the truck gave Action News pictures and said it was sideswiped going north on I-95." - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)

Charge foreigners at Taipei sites: official - Taipei Times (http://www.taipeitimes.co... )
1 decade ago from Bookmarklet - Comment - Hide - - - (Edit | Remove) - More...
"Foreign tourists should pay extra to enter Taipei historic sites and other tourist attractions, Taipei City Councilor Chen Chien-ming (陳建銘) of the Taiwan Solidarity Union (TSU) said yesterday. "Responsibility for maintaining historic sites should be shared, rather than requiring city residents to pay [via taxes], while allowing tourists to enjoy the sites for free," Chen said, adding that many nationally managed sites, such as the National Palace Museum, were increasing ticket prices amid a tourist influx from China. The city government's Department of Cultural Affairs charges entry fees for 11 of the 37 historic sites that it manages, according to department statistics. Foreign visitors pay extra only for entry to the Shilin Presidential Residence, a former home of Chiang Kai-shek (蔣介石) that has attracted a significant number of Chinese visitors since the main building was opened to the public in 2011. Entrance fees should be adjusted to allow Taipei residents free entry into all city-managed historic sites, at the same time charging fees to any foreign visitors, Chen said. Foreigners holding valid residency permits should also be allowed free entrance, since they also pay taxes, he added." - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)

"A naked woman plowed her car through the front of a Houston Kohl's store at about 60 mph, leaving a gaping hole Monday, witnesses said. The unidentified woman had just left happy hour at a P.F. Chang's restaurant across the Royal Oaks shopping center parking lot, police told KTRK-TV. At some point, the driver took off her clothes. The 40-year-old sped until she had demolished a wall of the workout gear department at about 6:45 p.m., police said. "It was loud. She just kept going, wouldn't stop. She just went straight into the wall," shopping center security guard Godient Derbigney told the station." - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)

Grand Jury Declines to Charge Dallas Cops Who Shot Jason Harrison, Mentally | Dallas Observer (http://blogs.dallasobserv... http://blogs.dallasobserv... )

"The Dallas cops who shot and killed a mentally ill man holding a screwdriver will not face charges, after a grand jury declined to indict Dallas Police Department Officers John Rogers and Andrew Hutchins. "The family is obviously severely disappointed," attorney Geoff Henley told The Dallas Morning News. The news isn't a surprise: police officers in North Texas and the rest of America rarely face charges in officer-involved shootings, and DPD Chief David Brown has previously spoken out in support of the officers. Rogers and Hutchins were placed on administrative leave for five days before returning back to work. " - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)

Florida Man Tries to Kiss Cottonmouth Snake, Hospitalized after Bite | OutdoorHub (http://www.outdoorhub.com... http://www.outdoorhub.com... )

"One Florida man learned the hard way that water moccasins do not make the best kissing partners. According to Fox 13, 18-year-old Austin Hatfield of Wimauma was hospitalized last Saturday after being bitten by a cottonmouth while attempting to kiss it. Friends said that Hatfield had captured the snake from his girlfriend's yard several days before and was keeping it in a pillowcase. Hatfield occasionally took the snake out to kiss it on the mouth, but on Saturday, the snake decided to end the relationship. "He took it out, put it on his chest and it was acting funny, and it jumped up and got him," said Jason Belcher, who witnessed the attack. "He ripped it off his face, threw it on the ground and he started swelling up immediately. It was pretty frightening."" - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)

Spanish Activists Stage A Protest Consisting Entirely Of Holograms (http://io9.com/spanish-ac... http://i.kinja-img.com/ga... )
1 decade ago from Bookmarklet - Comment - Hide - - - (Edit | Remove) - More...
"In what is being called the world's first virtual political demonstration, Spanish activists have used holograms to protest a controversial new law limiting the rights and freedoms of protestors. "Our protest with holograms is ironic," noted Holograms For Freedom spokesperson Carlos Escano in El Mundo. "With the restrictions we're suffering on our freedoms of association and peaceful assembly, the last options that will be left to use in the end will be to protest through our holograms." Escano is referring to Spain's controversial "Citizen Safety Law," which is set to take effect on July 1st. Under this law, dubbed by activists as the "gag law," it will be illegal to gather in front of government buildings -- including universities and hospitals -- without permission from the authorities. Organizers who disobey the law could face fines up to E600,000 (USD $634,665). Disrespecting police officers carries a E600 fine (USD $635), while filming or photographing the police carries a E30,000 (USD $31,733) fine. " - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)

"Action," Feig called out, beginning the umpteenth take of the untying sequence. Aldo, played by Peter Serafinowicz, shimmied up behind Susan and, pressing his bound hands enthusiastically against her backside, got to work. "The knot and your hands are about to enter my colon!" McCarthy, as Susan, protested. Feig, breaking in, suggested a response for Serafinowicz: "Trust me, if I was that close to your colon, you would be screaming in ecstasy." Some 72 hours later and 6,200 miles away, the editor Brent White was at a production facility in Burbank, Calif., guffawing as he watched footage of this exchange on a 22-inch reference monitor. White is not a particularly funny person, but he has one of Hollywood's most finely attuned, and highly valued, senses of humor. " - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)
"The Woodland Hills screening promised something more practical than a sense of how “Spy” would fare in the wild: A microphone placed at the front of the theater would provide White with a recording of the audience’s laughter, against which to edit future versions of the film. If a joke didn’t send the crest of the waveform sufficiently high, it would either be tweaked or replaced with an alternate joke and demoted to the film’s “B-cut” — a version composed of jokes that hadn’t killed but that Feig wasn’t ready to trash. Some test audiences would unwittingly watch the B-cut, and if certain jokes went over great, “then I’ll steal them and drop them into the A-cut,” White said." - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)

Teams prepare for day of birdwatching competition - Taipei Times (http://www.taipeitimes.co... )

"About 150 bird enthusiasts are to participate in a birdwatching competition in central Taiwan's Dasyueshan (大雪山), an area known for its avian diversity, an organizer said. The participants, including five from Canada, are to compete at the fifth Dasyueshan Bird Race today and tomorrow, the Chinese Wild Bird Federation said. During the event, which is the largest and longest-running competition of its type in Taiwan, birdwatchers will compete in teams to see or hear the greatest number of bird species over 24 hours in the Dasyueshan National Forest Recreation Area. From 10:30am today until 10:30am tomorrow, the competitors could be treated to courtship displays by Mikado and Swinhoe's pheasants at the nation's top birdwatching site, campaign manager Chiu Po-ying said. "Hopefully we will be able to record more bird species than ever this year," Chiu said, adding that 172 bird species have been recorded over the past four events, including 23 of the nation's 25 endemic species. The competition is also aimed at monitoring bird populations and their conservation in Taiwan, with data generated during the event to be added to a global database on eBird.org, Chiu said." - JustDuckie - - (Edit | Remove)
