Financial analyst Jim LaCamp sees Radio Shack’s woes in the massive Sundance Square store across the street from his office. “I don’t see a lot of people and this is supposed to be a flagship store,” Lacamp said. “And it’s anecdotal evidence, I’m not here all the time. But, I don’t see a lot of people there even though I see a lot of people in Sundance Square.” The company is losing hundreds of millions of dollars every quarter despite closing stores across the country. Reports the company will file for bankruptcy in February sent Radio Shack stock prices plummeting Thursday. One of the problems? Branding. “You ask people, ‘What is RadioShack and what do you do there?’ And it’s little niche parts.” Even people who walk past the store daily aren’t sure what they’d buy there. - GuitarBuster - -

For this year, I signed up for a different, less expensive healthcare plan on 12/15/14. I still haven't received a plan description, handbook, welcome packet, or a printed invoice. I've called multiple times since Christmas, trying to get them. I'm so pissed about the whole mess. - GuitarBuster - -

Worst customer service ever. I had a voice mail about an important message with a pin number to access the message. I thought maybe they had figured out the plan and premium mess. Dan Patrick to help Texas lawmakers write bills over the next five months. Patrick said Thursday that more than 50 hand-picked businessmen will advise the Senate on a range of issues from economic development to transportation. They include oilman Tim Dunn, who last year donated $50,000 to Patrick and more than $2 million to the ultraconservative activist group Empower Texans. Other members run businesses that already spending millions lobbying lawmakers. Watchdog groups quickly condemned the panels as favor to special interests. The recall of this painful episode only heightened the pleasure of thumbing through the recent Lead Kindly Light by Sarah Bryan and Peter Honig, a nifty package consisting of a hundred or so old photographs, many of them found in secondhand stores throughout the Carolinas, and a pair of CDs containing digital remastering of primarily country-fiddle 78s from the 1920s and '30s. Here, at least, were some people who knew how to take care of what’s gone by. There are other compilations not unlike Lead Kindly Light. The same publisher-packager, Dust-to-Digital, offers Parchman, a collection of photos and field recordings made at the Mississippi State Penitentiary by the unmatched Alan Lomax during the 1940s and ’50s. Not to slight the magisterial contributions of someone who was the first to record Muddy Waters and got Jelly Roll Morton to recount, self-aggrandizingly, his life and times, but works by Lomax and other professional folklorists often smack of the museum. The template of the maniacal, sweaty-browed collector who will do almost anything to lay his hands on a Maltese-falcon-like 78 was set for all time by the cartoonist R. Crumb, the best known of these backwoods record stalkers. Lead Kindly Light takes a more joyfully relaxed approach to its beloved materials. - GuitarBuster - -

The attitude is established in the introduction written by Honig, who put together the CDs from his collection of 78s (Bryan, the curator of the photo archive, has her own essay). Harking back to a July 27, 1927 recording session featuring the Blue Ridge Corn Shuckers, Honig imagines a scene in which the group’s leader, Ernest Van Stoneman, tells his fellow pickers that the storied Victor Records producer Ralph Peer believes more money will be made if the Shuckers can come up with a proto–Hee Haw skit to accompany the music. None of the musicians are too crazy about this, but fiddler Eck Dunford suggests everyone can play a bit and then pretend to take a swig of corn liquor. “Aw hell,” complains Stoneman, “what kind of idiot would enjoy listening to that?” - GuitarBuster - -

The Texas House approved rules Wednesday to be able to install panic buttons and eject hostile members of the public from their offices, after a confrontation between lawmakers and open carry advocates visiting the Capitol on the opening day of the 2015 session. "I think that public servants and members of the public ought to feel safe and secure when they come to the Capitol," said Rep. Trey Martinez Fischer, who sponsored an amendment to add the safety measures to the house housekeeping rules. "That being said, it came to my attention there was some disagreement as to whether members have to accommodate individuals or groups that are acting in a threatening or belligerent manner." On Tuesday, around 15 to 20 members of the group Open Carry Tarrant County visited several lawmaker offices urging them to support House Bill 195, which seeks to undo Texas' 125-year ban on the open carry of handguns. Several House members, including Democrats Poncho Nevarez of Eagle Pass and Celia Israel of Austin, said the group hassled them or their staff. About five years ago, Iranian photographer Mohammad Reza Domiri Ganji came across a series of photos from the interior of the Egyptian pyramids. That made him wonder whether he could take photos of historical sites as well. A self-taught photographer, he started to experiment with panorama, monument and landscape photography. In this series of photos, he captures the interplay between light and symmetry inside Iranian mosques, showing the world a rarely seen side of the country. Ganji’s goal is to portray places of worship from unexpected points of view. And the insight his photos give is indeed quite unique. Mosques are normally very crowded, and many of them do not allow professional photography equipment inside.
