"A Norwegian musician once tried to build a "New Norway" in this state. Norwegian musician Ole Bull attempted for a short time in 1852 to establish a New Norway colony in Pennsylvania, which is now commonly referred to as the Ole Bull Colony. The project failed when there wasn't enough land to till, and Bull ended up going back to performing concerts." - friarw - - (Edit | Remove)

OGLETREE RESOLUTION: BISHOP VOWS NO TRIALS « Reconciling Ministries Network - http://www.rmnetwork.org/ogletre...
1 decade ago from Friendfeed - Comment - Hide - - - (Edit | Remove) - More...
"In a huge victory for all United Methodists, charges against Rev. Dr. Tom Ogletree were dismissed without any conditions. Ogletree was facing a church trial for officiating the same-sex wedding of his son. Bishop Martin McLee of New York said in a statement, “I call for and commit to cessation of trials for conducting ceremonies which celebrate homosexual unions or performing same-gender wedding ceremonies and instead offer a process of theological, spiritual and ecclesiastical conversation.”" - friarw - - (Edit | Remove)
Of course, Bishop McLee's pronouncements have no effect on United Methodism in Eastern PA. - friarw - - (Edit | Remove)

There are some Christians (notably Reformed and Calvinist types) who seem to relish the idea of the "wrath of God." Everytime I hear one write or talk about the wrath of God (and it's too frequent an occurrence I might add) I picture God as a constipated divine being with an eternal grimace on his face waiting to dump a load on us human beings.

I drove down to Murphysboro, IL yesterday (this is their courthouse above) to testify on behalf of a young woman that has been part of our congregation since she was a teenager. It is a case that’s been dragging on since her senior year of college at SIU, and yesterday was the sentencing. It’s not unusual for me to be in court with one of the younger members of my congregation. I’ve had to come to grips with the fact that even the smallest offense can turn into an epic punishment for someone that doesn’t have the luxury of being white. - friarw - - (Edit | Remove)

I had lunch at St. Peters, talked a bit with Jim and a couple of friends, and then went home to get a nap. Four hours later I am awake. This was an exhausting and disappointing weekend. The confirmation retreat sucked, as you can tell from my earlier posts, and I really hoped it would be an enjoyable experience for my church youth.
