NASA launches search for 'moon trees' - USATODAY.com - http://www.usatoday.com/tech...

"NASA is trying to track down several hundred aging travelers who flew to the moon and back 40 years ago and now live quietly across the United States. It took an e-mail from a third-grade class in Indiana years ago to remind the space agency about these early visitors to outer space." - Jenny H - - (Edit | Remove)

"The agency announced last week that it is still searching for several hundred "moon trees" grown from seeds carried aboard the Apollo 14 command module that orbited the moon in 1971. Part science experiment, part public relations campaign, the idea was to see whether space flight affected their ability to sprout. Astronaut Stuart Roosa carried a metal canister about the size of a soda can in his personal kit filled with more than 500 seeds from loblolly pine, redwood, sweet gum, sycamore and Douglas fir trees. He did it in part to honor the U.S. Forest Service, where he had served as a smoke jumper, the first responders to forest fires." - Jenny H - - (Edit | Remove)

"Craniata (sometimes Craniota) is a proposed clade of chordate animals that contains the Myxini (hagfish), Petromyzontida (including lampreys), and Gnathostomata (jawed vertebrates)[2][3] as living representatives. As the name suggests, Craniata are animals with a (hard bone or cartilage) skull in Chordata. Craniata as an unranked taxon replaces the former use of Vertebrata (Vertebrata sensu lato). The main difference of the old and new (Vertebrata sensu stricto) interpretation of Vertebrata is that Myxini and sometimes the Petromyzontida (see Systematics and taxonomy, below) are no longer included in Vertebrata. The Myxini lack proper vertebrae, which are characteristic for vertebrates according to the new interpretation, whereas traditionally, and confusingly, they were not (Hickman et al., 2007)." - Jenny H - - (Edit | Remove)

No More Barriers Part One: Your Brain | OutsideOnline.com - http://outsideonline.com/fitness...
1 decade ago from Friendfeed - Comment - Hide - - - (Edit | Remove) - More...
"For most of us, the biggest barrier is motivation—getting started on a training plan and then staying hooked. (Just ask anyone who's made a New Year's resolution to get fit.) For dedicated athletes, the mind is also a key to better performance. According to Steven Ungerleider, author of Mental Training for Peak Performance, Eastern European athletes have been using formal mental training to help them excel since at least the 1960s, and by the 1988 Olympics in Seoul, 83 percent of all athletes were using some form of it—visualization, positive self-talk, mind-clearing relaxation tricks, and goal setting—as part of their regimen." - Jenny H - - (Edit | Remove)

"AFTER RIDING TO a surprising fourth-place finish at the 2008 Tour de France, Christian Vande Velde looked like the next big thing in American cycling. But the following season, his ambitions were laid low by a brutal crash in the Giro d'Italia, and then they were quashed again in 2010 by a string of race-ending accidents. "It was tough," the 34-year-old Vande Velde admits. "It killed my motivation, and I considered hanging it up." If Vande Velde had let his career coast to a halt, no one would have blamed him. Many everyday athletes, especially those who aren't paid to perform, lose their drive over smaller hitches than that, from nagging injuries to boredom and burnout. "Most athletes come up against a mental roadblock like this at some point," says Julie Emmerman, a psychologist who works with riders on Vande Velde's team, Garmin-Cervélo. "The question then becomes how to rekindle the fire."" - Jenny H - - (Edit | Remove)

70 Years Later, A New Chance To Read 'Marriage' : NPR - http://www.npr.org/2011...
1 decade ago from Friendfeed - Comment - Hide - - - (Edit | Remove) - More...
"There is a point early on in Sandor Marai's Portraits of a Marriage — a 1941 novel that is just now back in print — when our narrator, a middle-class woman who has married into the vanishing Hungarian bourgeoisie, realizes that she has lost her husband to an invisible rival. The smoking gun is a lilac ribbon in his wallet. With the singular focus of a lover scorned, Ilonka vows to reclaim her marriage. But as she explains years later to a friend in a Budapest cafe (while across the room, her now-ex-husband, Peter, buys a candied orange peel for his new wife), her relationship was suffering from emotional absentia long before she discovered the infidelity. "He loved me, no question about that," she says. "But at the same time it was as if he were merely tolerating me in his house, in his very life."" - Jenny H - - (Edit | Remove)

Radiohead's new album, 'King of Limbs,' to be released as digital download this weekend - http://www.nydailynews.com/enterta...
1 decade ago from Friendfeed - Comment - Hide - - - (Edit | Remove) - More...
"UK rock band Radiohead announced Monday that its newest album, "The King of Limbs," will be released as a digital download on Saturday, Feb 19. The band's website featured a message to fans which readd "Thank You For Waiting" and offered a link where the new album is available for pre-order. The digital version, in MP3 or WAV formats, costs $9 and $14, respectively, and can be "pre-ordered now and downloaded on Saturday" according to the site." - Jenny H - - (Edit | Remove)
"Fans of Radiohead's 2007 digital release "In Rainbows," a full-length album that was available for download at whatever price the user decided to pay, may be dissapointed to learn of the new fixed-price system. However, moving away from the digital-only arena, the band is also offering what they have dubbed "the world's first Newspaper Album," which includes the record on one CD as well as two 10" vinyl records. Also packaged with the Newspaper Album is "Many large sheets of artwork" and "625 tiny pieces of artwork" according to the website." - Jenny H - - (Edit | Remove)

"Zynga is continuing to push mobile games. The company is rolling out "Words With Friends" to Android-based phones and tablets. "Zynga is dedicated to making its games available anytime and on any device regardless of platform," David Ko, Zynga's senior vice president of mobile, said in a statement. Previously, the game had only been available on the iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch, where Zynga said "Words With Friends" has more than 10 million users. Now players on both platforms can compete against each other in the multi-touch, Scrabble-like game. Features are the same on iOS and Android-based devices, including the ability to play a maximum of 20 games at a time, in-game chat, and push notifications." - Jenny H - - (Edit | Remove)
