Protection of the Mt. Charleston Blue Butterfly under Endangered Species Act - http://www.fws.gov/cno...
1 decade ago from Friendfeed - Comment - Hide - - - (Edit | Remove) - More...
"The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (Service) has determined that the Mt. Charleston blue butterfly (Plebejus shasta charlestonensis) (formerly in the genus Icaricia) warrants protection under the Endangered Species Act, but that adding the subspecies to the Federal Lists of Endangered and Threatened Wildlife and Plants is precluded by the need to complete other listing actions of a higher priority. The Service’s decision will be published in the Federal Register on Tuesday, March 8, 2011. In making this determination, the Service completed a comprehensive review, known as a 12-month finding, and found that the best scientific and commercial data available indicates the Mt. Charleston blue butterfly is warranted for listing as a threatened or endangered species throughout its range. However, the Service is precluded from beginning work immediately on a listing proposal because its limited resources must be devoted to other, higher priority actions. The Mt. Charleston blue butterfly will be added to the list of candidate species eligible for Endangered Species Act protection. The Service will continue to work closely with the U.S. Forest Service and other entities to promote cooperative conservation efforts including surveys, life history studies, habitat protection, and restoration activities." - Jenny H - - (Edit | Remove)

A Visual Tour of Everest | The Outside Blog - http://outside-blog.away.com/blog...

"I often write about Everest but it takes a lot of words and sometimes, as they say, a picture is worth a thousand words. So here are two "pictures" you might find interesting. The first is a short animation I created a while back showing the typical Everest south side expedition schedule. There is no sound, just watch the moving ball! The "ZZZZ's" indicate nights climbers sleep at each camp and the rest is pretty self explanatory. But for those new to Everest, the reason for so many trips up and down the mountain is to condition the body to the reduced oxygen levels. This is often called "climb high, sleep low" and is the primary reason an Everest (or any big mountain) takes multiple weeks. To illustrate the point, if we all flew to Base Camp and started climbing without some acclimatization time, most, if not all of us, would become extremely sick or even die. So with no more words, here goes:" - Jenny H - - (Edit | Remove)

New Beetle Species, Named for National Geographic, Sheds Light on Island Evolution - NatGeo News Watch - http://blogs.nationalgeographic.com/blogs...

"Thanks to the study of DNA sequence divergence, we could establish an origin for this group in the Middle Miocene, some 15 million years ago, and DNA sequences from gut contents also provided us with the clue about the diet of these insects using innovative methods. Interestingly, their food could be appointed to plant groups not yet discovered in the island! Our immediate plans involve studying in detail the diversity of this group of beetles, the Chrysomelidae, exploiting the information and detail offered by DNA sequence data and phylogenetic methods. Our first campaign, thanks to CRE support, furnished hundreds of specimens which will be the basis for a sound assessment of biodiversity for this group and enhance species discovery, as in the case of Arsipoda." - Jenny H - - (Edit | Remove)

"Is there a rootsy folk-rock band — or any rock band, period, this side of Rush — that's more reliant on drumming than The Dodos? Multi-instrumentalists Meric Long and Logan Kroeber build their best songs around percussion to startling effect: "Good" and "Don't Try and Hide It," from the new No Color, pound and clatter with such precision and clarity, the whomp of the drums might as well get a lead-vocal credit." - Jenny H - - (Edit | Remove)

Could Cornstarch Have Plugged BP's Oil Well? : NPR - http://www.npr.org/2011...
1 decade ago from Friendfeed - Comment - Hide - - - (Edit | Remove) - More...
"The problem, as Katz saw it, was that oil and gas blasting up the well tended to break up the drilling mud into fine particles, and a light mist like that ends up getting shot up the pipe and dumped onto the seafloor. Katz wondered whether there was some kind of fluid that wouldn't immediately be dispersed into tiny particles when it encountered the rapidly flowing oil. "I realized after a while that cornstarch suspension — oobleck, the kids call it — has this wonderful property that if it's not flowing rapidly, it's a liquid that flows pretty well," Katz says. "But if you try to make it flow rapidly, it suddenly turns stiff and it doesn't flow at all." Oobleck versus a stream of bubbling hot oil? Really? Yep." - Jenny H - - (Edit | Remove)
1 other comments...
""The problem with using something like cornstarch and water is getting it where it needs to be," Wereley says. You'd have to pump a lot of it, fast, into the well if it's going to work. And there might be trouble pumping it — remember, oobleck gets stiff when it's put under pressure. "It would tend to create that same reaction when you're trying to pump it down the hole." Wereley calculates that you'd have to pump it so slowly that you couldn't get it down the hole faster than the oil was rushing up. And that's a big problem. A BP spokeswoman told NPR their engineers reviewed the idea and decided it wouldn't work. But Katz still figures it's a good idea worth exploring for the next time an oil well is running completely out of control." - Jenny H - - (Edit | Remove)

"The new album also features a familiar sound from Cake's catalog: the buzzy percussion instrument called the vibraslap. Descended from an African instrument made out of the jawbone of a large mammal, the vibraslap isn't a natural fit for a rock band — but McCrae has always found ways to incorporate it. "It really can't be heard very well over the usual bombast of rock," he says. "I have to find places where the rock sort of recedes."" - Jenny H - - (Edit | Remove)
