Oregon sculptor turns beach trash into meaningful art - http://www.hcn.org/issues...

"South of Bandon, Ore., along Highway 101, there perches a 12-foot-tall bird with wings made of flip-flop soles and a belly of plastic lids. Its fishing-float feet are held in place by knotted plastic fishing line. The bird, which resembles the love child of an albatross, an eagle and a seagull, is just one of the huge sculptures of marine life that artist and teacher Angela Haseltine Pozzi creates and displays at Art 101, her workshop and gallery." - Jenny H - - (Edit | Remove)
"Born to a family of artists in Portland, Ore., Pozzi spent her childhood summers "tidepooling" at the beach. She taught art for 30 years before returning in 2007 to the coastal town of Bandon to recover from the tragic loss of her husband. Shocked by the plastic flotsam littering the coast, the now 53-year-old Pozzi recruited community members to help clean up the beach. From their gleanings she now builds sculptures she hopes will prompt viewers to reconsider their consumption habits. " - Jenny H - - (Edit | Remove)

Thus began one of our typical "Rabbit hole discussions." We started talking evolution in general, how birds are really reptiles, feathers are modified scales, blah, blah, and then we talked about how everything came from fish. I digressed by noting that whales went back to the water after a brief stint as carnivorous ungulates. Then we started talking about whales during their brief foray on land. - Jenny H - - (Edit | Remove)

Use Dictionary Margins to Store Passwords by Word Association - http://lifehacker.com/#!57816...
1 decade ago from Friendfeed - Comment - Hide - - - (Edit | Remove) - More...
"You'll often hear a low-level argument against writing your passwords down, especially anywhere near your computer. But this isn't a Post-It note under the keyboard. It's a small note, written in the margins of dictionary pages that relate specifically to the sites requiring strong, hard-to-memorize passwords. And as one security expert suggests, writing down passwords in a place only you know about is a realistic, sensible compromise." - Jenny H - - (Edit | Remove)
"So stash your NewEgg password near "fetish," and keep your work email tucked next to "endless." Even if some kind of dastardly villain goes page-by-page through a dictionary to find your passwords, they'll need to know how you think about those words to use them against you. And if you ever need to direct a spouse or other trusted friend to certain passwords, you can point them to your Webster's College." - Jenny H - - (Edit | Remove)

"In "High Hawk Season," from the forthcoming All Eternals Deck, The Mountain Goats' John Darnielle sums up his M.O. in one line: "We are young supernovas and the heat's about to break." It's all there — the desperation of youth, the imminence of disaster — up to and including the way Darnielle's words are packaged in an arrangement that's almost jarringly laid-back. Once a wild man whose shouted white-knuckle screeds could barely be contained by the crummy boom boxes on which he recorded them, Darnielle has aged into a singing poet whose words still hit like punches." - Jenny H - - (Edit | Remove)

Scientists develop high-tech crop map - http://www.sciencedaily.com/release...
1 decade ago from Friendfeed - Comment - Hide - - - (Edit | Remove) - More...
"AgroAtlas is a new interactive website that shows the geographic distributions of 100 crops; 640 species of crop diseases, pests, and weeds; and 560 wild crop relatives growing in Russia and neighboring countries. Downloadable maps and geographic information system (GIS) software are also available, allowing layering of data, such as that relating major wheat production areas to concentrations of Russian wheat aphids." - Jenny H - - (Edit | Remove)
1 other comments...
"According to U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) plant geneticist Stephanie Greene, the impetus behind developing AgroAtlas was to promote world food security, particularly in Newly Independent States -- countries of the former Soviet Union striving to broaden their agricultural base. Greene works in the National Temperate Forage Legume Genetic Resources Unit operated at Prosser, Wash., by the Agricultural Research Service (ARS), USDA's principal intramural scientific research agency. Greene leads the AgroAtlas project with Alexandr N. Afonin, a senior scientist with St. Petersburg State University in Russia. The Internet-based map is the successful result of a proposal they submitted in 2003 for funding under a program coordinated by the ARS Office of International Research Programs (OIRP) in Beltsville, Md., and supported by the U.S. Department of State." - Jenny H - - (Edit | Remove)

Study: Diet May Help ADHD Kids More Than Drugs : NPR - http://www.npr.org/2011...
1 decade ago from Friendfeed - Comment - Hide - - - (Edit | Remove) - More...
""After the diet, they were just normal children with normal behavior," she says. No longer were they easily distracted or forgetful, and the temper tantrums subsided. Some teachers said they never thought it would work, Pelsser says. "It was so strange," she says, "that a diet would change the behavior of a child as thoroughly as they saw it. It was a miracle, a teacher said." But diet is not the solution for all children with ADHD, Pelsser cautions. "In all children, we should start with diet research," she says. If a child's behavior doesn't change, then drugs may still be necessary. "But now we are giving them all drugs, and I think that's a huge mistake," she says. Also, Pelsser warns, altering your child's diet without a doctor's supervision is inadvisable. "We have got good news — that food is the main cause of ADHD," she says. "We've got bad news — that we have to train physicians to monitor this procedure because it cannot be done by a physician who is not trained."" - Jenny H - - (Edit | Remove)
