In 1919, Bohemian oil heiress, theater enthusiast and political radical Aline Barnsdall purchased the 36-acre park site now known as Barnsdall Park. She enlisted architect Frank Lloyd Wright to design the premises, his first in Los Angeles, as a sweeping complex for avant-garde theater, featuring an ambitious space for artists to live and work -- and a home for the Barnsdall and her daughter. However, Barnsdall fired Wright in 1921 due to, among other things, high costs and artistic differences. The complex remained unfinished, but Wright left behind the completed Barnsdall home, the Hollyhock House, a stunning paradigm of California modern design. - GuitarBuster - -

But by 1969, things were finished: singer and guitarist Roky Erickson pled guilty by reason of insanity to possession of marijuana in order to avoid a ten-year jail term, and would spend several years institutionalized and receiving electro-convulsive therapy. As Michael Hall wrote in a detailed biography of Erickson for Texas Monthly in 2001: Because Roky had a habit of escaping minimum-security joints, he was sent to Rusk State Hospital, a facility that housed the criminally insane in East Texas. After several years of gobbling massive amounts of LSD, speed, and any other drugs someone might offer, he was given shock treatment and massive amounts of Thorazine, a drug used to sedate psychotics. Roky later told drummer Freddie Krc how terribly he was treated: “I was in there with people who’d chopped up people with a butcher knife, and they treated me worse because I had long hair.” - GuitarBuster - -

But the land didn’t go to developers. Instead the ranch was sold to a consortium of environmental groups—including the Nature Conservancy, the Conservation Fund, and the Texas Parks and Wildlife Foundation—with plans to turn it over to Texas Parks and Wildlife and open it to the public. The Campanula crossed my musical path for the first time almost 30 years ago. The German violin maker Helmut Bleffert came to me in 1986 and presented his new idea for a stringed instrument. As the form of the instrument is taken from the bell flower, he named it with the Latin name ‘Campanula’. It could be played technically exactly like a classical cello, but featured 16 additional resonating strings, fixed to the front of the instrument.
