Hunting for the Source of the World’s Most Beguiling Folk Music - NYTimes.com - http://www.nytimes.com/2014...

On Sept. 20, 1926, the Greek violinist Alexis Zoumbas recorded one of the most devastating bits of music I’ve ever encountered. The song, “Epirotiko Mirologi,” is a pentatonic lament — mirologi — that, for millenniums, has been sung beside fresh graves in Epirus, a historically contentious chunk of land on the Greek-Albanian border. The performance is a little over four minutes long, instrumental and largely improvised against the low anchoring drone of some unnamed accompanist dragging a bow across a double bass. Zoumbas was a technically proficient musician, even virtuosic, but his real gift was in effectively articulating disintegration. There is a palpable hysteria to his playing; each note trembles, as if he has recently suffered an emotional collapse of unknowable magnitude. - GuitarBuster - - (Edit | Remove)

Audit: Perry’s business fund gave millions to firms, universities that never sent an application | Dallas Morning News - http://trailblazersblog.dallasnews.com/2014...

The first independent audit of the Texas Enterprise Fund shows that the governor’s job-creating fund awarded $222 million — almost half the money granted — to entities that never submitted applications or specific promises to create jobs. The 98-page report by the state auditor, released to lawmakers Thursday, paints a picture of a $500 million fund that, at least in its early years, gave away taxpayer money without a set evaluation process or a consistent criteria. Early grants were awarded to companies or universities without their submitting formal applications, and some large projects were never required to create a single job — although that is the legislative mandate by which the fund was started. Numerous contracts showed inconsistent requirements, weak compliance monitoring and led the auditor to state that it cannot verify many of the jobs or investments that were credited to the program. - GuitarBuster - - (Edit | Remove)

Here's How Much Congress Makes for Every Hour They're Actually Doing Work - Mic - http://mic.com/article...
1 decade ago from Friendfeed - Comment - Hide - - - (Edit | Remove) - More...
Congress will have been in session for eight days total during the 102-day stretch from Aug. 1 to Nov. 12, after the midterm elections. As the Hill explains, given lawmakers' $174,000 annual salaries, their pay works out to $608 per hour over that span. That figure gets even crazier for leaders like House Speaker John Boehner, who commands slightly higher pay. Per this calculation, Boehner brings home $781 per hour for his work between August and November. The numbers: While the past few years of Congress may have been historically inactive, these kind of stretches aren't exactly breaking tradition. Since 1978, according to the Washington Post, Congress has been in session about one-third of the time (just less than half when limited to weekdays). All in all, our lawmakers have only worked a full week of work 14% of the time. - GuitarBuster - - (Edit | Remove)
