Abbott, who succeeded fellow Republican Rick Perry as governor earlier this month, called the late Navy SEAL “a true American hero.”
“I have declared Feb. 2 to be Chris Kyle Day in Texas. We honor our military heroes,” Abbott tweeted Friday.

This two CD set features four classic Django Reinhardt albums plus, including original LP liner notes The CDs have been finely re-mastered and are low priced double CD. Included are 'DJANGO', 'django', 'The Legendary Django' and 'Django Reinhardt' plus the E.P. 'Larry Adler with Quintette of the Hot Club Of France' plus two alternatives from the E.P. taken from 78's. Listening to these early albums from the 1930's and 1940's with the legendary Quintette de Hot Club de France, which of course also featured the masterful violin playing of Stephane Grappelli, Reinhardt's playing still defies belief for its urgency, passion skill and vibrancy. His style of playing, no doubt due to the tragic accident that left him only the use of two of his left hand fingers is stunning by any standards. All four albums plus have been digitally re-mastered for probably the finest sound quality ever!

At the turn of the last century, when the blues was in its formative years, fiddle was among the primary instruments used by the rural blacks who were performing in this style, and by 1930 over 50 different black blues fiddle players had their work on wax.
Even as the guitar was rising in prominence, many of the star players such as Lonnie Johnson and Big Bill Broonzy played both guitar and fiddle. In many ways it is the ideal blues instrument; closest to the human voice, capable of great passion, and able to deal easily with the uncertain and sinuous areas “between the notes”, all of which are crucial to the blues. Yet by the end of the depression years, in the mid 30’s, the blues fiddle was virtually a thing of the past, leaving no trace but some dusty old recordings. Why bother, then, with blues fiddle at all in this day and age?. Where are the blues fiddle tune books, the blues fiddle contests, blues fiddle festivals? Pretty thin on the ground, to put it mildly. However, although in itself very much a minority genre, blues remains a core element of rock, country, western swing, bluegrass and jazz, and without it you will never really get to grips with any of these styles.

Marin “Tagoi” Sandu, bandleader of Bahto Delo Delo, is a Romani virtuoso accordion player and singer of the traditional lautari style in Romania. With guidance from his late father, Nicolae Neacsu, who was one of the founders of Taraf De Haidouks and a very respected violinist of his time, Tagoi started learning music from the age of eight. At 64, he plays and sings a large repertoire of Romani and lautari tunes. Tagoi still lives in the legendary village of Clejani in southern Romania with his wife. While he has dedicated his entire life to music, he has never toured outside of Europe or released an album.
His band Bahto Delo Delo consists of upright bass, violin and cimbalom, a stringed instrument struck with sticks.
“Bahto Delo Delo” means “may God give you luck” in the Roma language. The songs often look back to the golden era of Romanian music—when Bucharest radio stations tuned into the sounds of Aurel and Victor Gore, Romica Puceanu, and Toni Iordache—and are performed in a virtousic style that has all but been lost.

"This here is called a bouzouki, unless you're going through airport security, in which case it's better to call it a mandocello."
Arlington sent the owners of the home in the 2400 block of N. Cooper St. a letter Wednesday asking them to shut down immediately, accusing them of illegally operating a home-based business. The home address is advertised online as a swingers club called Eutopia, which has reportedly had nearly 60 themed and general erotic parties for up to 200 people since its grand opening last May.
The city began investigating Eutopia last summer after complaints from neighbors who noticed the front lawn was paved over and up to 70 vehicles at a time parked at the home, officials said.

Ten years ago, Tompkins Square released the groundbreaking Imaginational Anthem, Volume One. It was the very first release from the innovative record label and it set a tone of sorts, a contemporary survey of American Primitive guitar innovators. Over six volumes, the label has explored music from legends (Kaki King, Jack Rose, Sandy Bull, Max Ochs) and upstarts (William Tyler, Daniel Bachman). For Imaginational Anthem, Volume 7, Tompkins Square turned to 20-year-old guitarist Hayden Pedigo. Pedigo cherry picked some of his favorite contemporary solo acoustic guitar tracks from around the globe, including tracks from Simon Scott, Sean Proper, Chuck Johnson and others. As Imaginational Anthem continues to prove time and time again, the world of American Primitive fingerstyle guitar – as established by figures such as John Fahey, Leo Kottke and Robbie Basho – is alive and well in 2015.
For a limited time, you can stream Imaginational Anthem, Volume Seven via the Fretboard Journal. If you like what you hear, the album is available for pre-order via this link. The album comes out February 17, 2015.

Back in 2007, Elana James -- fiddler, songwriter, and vocalist for the always innovative and swinging Hot Club of Cowtown -- released a self-titled solo album. Come February 2015, James makes her solo return with a stunning new effort, Black Beauty, that showcases her vocal range, brilliant fiddling and canny ability to cast an enchanting musical spell by weaving words and music under and around one another.
Black Beauty collects both originals and James’ versions of some of her favorite songs, by artists ranging from Dylan and Meri Wilson to Woody Guthrie and The Grateful Dead.
Her version of the Robert Hunter and Jerry Garcia gem, “Ripple,” which opens with a poignant fiddle run that bobs under and around an aching steel guitar, captures the original mystical character of the tune.

In 1959, Carlin met Jack Burns, a fellow DJ at radio station KXOL in Fort Worth, Texas. They formed a comedy team and after successful performances at Fort Worth's beat coffeehouse called The Cellar, Burns and Carlin headed for California in February 1960.

Twenty-eight members of the Winnemem Wintu tribe of northern California travel to New Zealand to reunite with their salmon relatives that run in the rivers of that country's South Island. The tribal members greet the adult fish as they return to spawn, and release young fry to begin their lives. With the permission and assistance of members of the Ngai Tahu/Waitaha/Ngati Mamoe tribes of the Maori, the Winnemem hold four days of ceremony. And the two groups make plans to bring their salmon home to the McCloud River, where salmon have not run since 1945, when the Shasta Dam blocked their runs.
